I'm trying to experience a wide variety of breeds so I know which are most compatible with our environment and their living quarters and stuff. I think the Sicilian Buttercups are SO PRETTY...wanted them until I read that they are "intolerant of confinement", active, flighty and non-docile I guess I shouldn't try those - doesn't sound like they'd be happy in an urban run/coop set-up. Then again, I have NJs and the same site says the same about those and ours are perfectly happy (so far) where they are. =/ I dunno. lol
Mine are bantams. I have my quad in a coop and run that is 8 X 12, I think. It is my smallest run. They are not the slightest bit flighty. They eat out of my hand and run around between my legs whenever I have them outside. They do love to get out and forage, but only get out about once or twice a week right now due to dark hitting before I get home. I wouldn't keep them in a cage but as long as they have some room to scratch and a couple of levels to roost on... No problem.

The cup works if you can get the leg under them, and its just goes too far out. If its orientated in the wrong way, you need to do things more radical.
Here is a pic of quails in cups. You want it to be tall enough that they have to stand UP to see out and wide enough it keeps thier feet under them, but not too wide or they dont stay under. And not too slick. Sometimes styrafoam cups are the best for chicks.

I have never heard of this idea before, but it does make sense!

Fun chicken day. I took a road trip with babymakes6 today to the seminary in Celina and brought back all the hatching eggs he would let us "pick up" from the breeding pens. They have a pretty big breeding operation. Soooo many cool breeds. I picked up a quad of POL Russian Orlaffs to go with my others and all the eggs that were on the ground in the pen. They had some really special birds that I managed to talk them into selling me some. I have to wait until they pick a few more from the pen for their breeding pen then I get to go up and get some. I'm not telling what they are until I get them. Of course I'll offer them on swap as soon as I can.

And I will be getting another breed from them as soon as I can! (P.S. same breed as Rachael's but different color!)
