Make a cup of tea or coffee, give the kids a pile of crayons and paper, take coffee out to the chicken coop and sit for ten minutes with little cluckie hens around your feet... It's amazing -- I have yet to find anything this treatment doesn't improve!

Yup, spending time with the chickens always makes me feel better.

Aw, thank you guys for all the support. I was pretty grumpy this morning after finding the eggs, so everything kind of ticked me off. I seem to complain a lot of here, I'm sorry about that... I'm not really a negative person, I promise!!
After I posted, I grabbed the electric blanket my MIL gave us for Christmas (I don't know why- we live in FL for heavens sake, but I used it anyway :lol:) and sat on the recliner. Silas climbed in my lap and promptly feel asleep. I spent the last 2 hours reading about fodder systems an fermenting food, and looking through my seed catalogs for my spring order.
Mood vastly improved.
I full heartedly agree about sitting out in the coop as a great source of comfort and stress relief. I do it a lot, even if only for a couple minutes. Watching chickens do their natural thing is very peaceful, and often they make me giggle.
When I was trying to quit smoking, I replaced my smoking breaks for coop breaks... I attribute my success fully to chicken antics.

Hey, we all need a safe place to vent :)

That's oustanding! And congrats :) I never managed to give up the nicotine -- did switch to electronic cigarettes, though, and it's made a world of difference. It's also waaaay cheaper! Plus you can get all kinds of cool flavors, like cappucino

Ooh, I shouldn't be telling you that. Quitting entirely is still the best!! And even cheaper

which = more chickens!

Just got in from doing barn chores. I made the girls (and boy) some oatmeal mash for a treat -- rolled oats, buttermilk, wheat germ, yeast... I let it sit on the heater for a while to warm up and when I took it out they absolutely wolfed it down while I was cleaning and changing water and stuff. Then we sat and played grape football for a while -- I was at the grocery store yesterday and happened to walk by a girl tossing a bunch of boxes from produce. Since I need to reorganize the closets I asked if it was okay to grab some :) There were also three grape shipping containers, which are about 6" high and about 16" x 24" or so, thick styrofoam with holes in them -- perfect chick transporters!! So I grabbed them too, and lo and behold there was a pint or so of loose grapes rattling around in them. So the chickens got them :)

I love grape football! And then my sweet little crossbreed hen had to come up on my lap for her five minutes of pets, of course. She closes her eyes and hunkers down, I love it. She's as soft as any cat! She's got to be very close to laying -- her comb and wattles are very red and she's almost as big as my full-grown rocks -- and I'm waiting to see how she does. If she turns out to be half as good a layer as her mom, I am decidedly hatching a bunch more of this particular cross. They've all been extremely friendly and calm, sturdy chicks, and fast growers (the boys were quite meaty enough for processing at 12 weeks).

She's now -- what? Aug. 21 hatch date so that's what, 18 weeks, I think. Her laying might be delayed a bit because it's midwinter, but as long as she's under 22 weeks I'll consider that a positive "selling" point, too. For whatever reason this particular cross seems to be making an outstanding utility bird, and one that makes a great pet, too -- all her brothers and sisters have gone to families with kids :) I really need to hatch some more and this time process a couple of the roos to see how they cook up

but I'm really trying to hold off and see how she lays first. If she's a three-egg-a-week bird, well, that kinda defeats the purpose!
