Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Yeah. they charge 50 cents a bird to test here. but they only have to test 30 birds for certification, so a max of $15...not too bad. didn't ask if there was a fee for the certificaiton.

Mine are 6-8 months but I have to wait until they are laying because they want 30 eggs sent in for the AI testing. I am only getting a couple a day now, and not from all the birds, just three or four. so not a comprehensive sample set by any means.

so my claiming on the swap page is now severely curtailed....but on a more positive note...Just found out that a lady down the road from us has white Sebbie geese! so I should be able to get a few eggs from her in the spring to hatch out! I really want my own source of large eggs for the decorating. but the ducks she has are call ducks...so not so large on the eggs.

never had to send eggs here. when they tested for pollurum it was a wing blood test, the AI was a mouth swab. Even had them swab when I was at a swap for AI. Never heard of the egg deal. Here anything 4 months and over gets tested. Last time took over 4 hours. This time???????????

Once I get redone I will be able to send the info to HI, SD and VA.

One day for fun but, maybe useless, exercise I went to all of the states that have NPIP and checked to compare test fees, cert fees, renewal fees and test req. etc. It was interesting as it is 'called' National but not. If I remember right HI has the requirement for NPIP to come in but no state program itself so no way to 'send' NPIP...... ?Some state have temp. grants that make the basic program free or close to it. Others can be as high as about $200-300+ yr with cost per bird and lab cost per test and drive time and farm fee for tester (from point of origin and back to p.o.i).

I don't sell products for human consumption so the cert. doesn't tell me what I really want to know. I want birds that come from flocks that are not contagious to other flocks for the birds' health and while some testers can do extra tests those are not what is required for your certification. I think it is folly that someone will bring in a new bird or juvies and because the seller was NPIP not do quarantine (and in my case local environmental stress test --I tell new birds that if they can't cut the dampness and husbandry as required please knock off now, sorry). The nasty stuff can be carried without notice and by the time you see sickness everybody is in a fight for their life. I am sure that one of these years it will be me crying for days 'cause something is killing my birds (and not a nasty 'coon) as it seems that over time no small breeder is immune. That is why commercial flocks are all-in and then all-out for replacements every year-18mos. What we do here with breed preservation, breed improvements, stock exchanges for diversity etc is very risky but important enough to do it. And I am proud of it!

I know I sound hysterical and I apologize for that, but please understand what NPIP is for and the WHY it is useful. I hope to apply this summer or next spring just so it is easier to share my birds, if they continue to be of worthy quality, of course.

You are absolutely right, of course. I'm restocking after losing all my birds...over 100 this fall...to MG. MG is not a required test for NPIP, although you can ask for it. Since it can be carried by wild birds and can pass through the egg, most people don't bother. But a carrier can easily slip past quarantine and infect your whole flock. When I was under state quarantine, I found that they don't even try to track it (just make you kill off your birds or try to test out...our chickens all had to be destroyed, but we saved the turkeys.) as they figure at least 50% of the birds in this state are carriers. Still, I'm going NPIP because I rather hope that if I limit to NPIP then I should increase my chances of getting birds from places that do some biosecurity, anyway. Maybe. Hopefully. We'll see.
