Hatcheries can set of shipping schedules, they should be able to do the same. You have these high end birds, but not the capability or customer service to handle your business? It might take awhile, but no matter what "rare" birds you have. Your business will suffer for it.

I think personally, when I get to the point where I can offer shipped chicks (which won't be for a couple of years yet, likely), that the only way I'm going to do it is by pre-order: You buy them, you put down a deposit, you tell me when you want them, and I will hatch them for that mailing date. Obviously, this will require much practice on my hatching techniques (and better equipment, lol!) plus it'd probably mean extras for my customers since I'd obviously always set extra eggs to be on the safe side. But ESPECIALLY when you're dealing with $50 and $100 birds, why wouldn't you do a better job shipping/communicating than the folks selling chicks for two bucks apiece?

Sorry, had to skip to the end.... lots of chatter today!! love it!!
I'm pretty sad tonite, because it's looking like I have a 1/48 hatch rate, and the one had bad cross beak and was missing an eye, so we culled it today...

part of me feels like throwing in the towel, but the smarter part of me says "don't give up!!"

DM.... sounds like you NEED more breeding pens and chickens, because, if chicken math is done correctly, anything that is not actually laying is not counted in your chicken count... so if you only count your laying HENS and useful roos, I'm sure you have FAR less than 300 chickens, lol

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that!!! If it helps, my last two hatches combined I got three chicks out of some 30-odd eggs. This one I got about 50% and I'm pretty sure it would've been significantly more if I'd just LEFT THE DANG INCUBATOR CLOSED!!!! (sorry, yes, I'm yelling at myself)

My current mini-hatch of six eggs has four chicks out, one pipped, and the other one hasn't done anything yet, but I'm giving it time. MUCH better!

culling new hatches when needed......... scissors work well, zip tie to the neck, I like baking soda and vinegar too as it just puts them to sleep. You can take a plastic shoe box storage box, add a small container to it with baking soda, have the vinegar ready place chick in the box slide lid in place and pour the vinegar into the BS bowl. Close lid completely and let the CO2 work.

sorry you have to do it
Thanks, but it has to be done if you are going to hatch eggs. I dare say everyone has had chicks come out in less than perfect shape.

Has everyone else found it is true that late hatchers have more issues than the on-time ones in the same batch? I resolved several hatches ago to stop helping chicks that pipped and didn't zip because EVERY time I have the chick has been deformed. It sounds cruel but I think that if they aren't strong enough to make it out on their own they aren't going to make it anyway. It just prolongs the suffering.

On a brighter note, I have 7 beautiful healthy Marans out of 11 eggs shipped, 1 died after pipping, which means 8 out of 11 developed. 1 cute fluffy Arkansas Blue, 1 Salmon Faverolle, & 4 healthy Coronation Sussex. Yay, me!!! I am so excited about the Marans from Stephanie. I want dark eggs and to cross some with my Araucana or AB's for OE's. Love a beautiful colored egg basket.

SCBirdfarm here has beautiful LF White Cochins and I believe they do ship. If not, I can go get them and ship them to you.

On another note, you are in one of my favorite areas of the country! How far are you from North Conway?

It is beautiful up there :) Lived up in northern NH for five years before coming to Ohio. I miss the mountains but UGH! Talk about COLD!!!

I have a lot of catching up to do...
What bothers me is them saying they will send 6 week old chicks, and sending 1-2 week olds in a big box with no heat pack! It is 10 degrees here! Of course, the pullet was dead.

I'm so sorry to hear about Rachael's birds. It seems that a lot of people are having problems with GFF lately.

Why I don't understand is why you wouldn't just fix the problem. Surely it's easier to do it properly than to have to do it multiple times and refund people. Or not refund people as it seems in some cases. It's just such an easy fix! I just don't get it

You would think it would be cheaper to send them with a heat pack and at the right time as compared to replacing birds that are worth potentially hundreds of dollars each, but maybe I'm just slow...

Quote: This is true from what I have seen in most cases too. I agree culling is part of breeding and hatching. We have of those same crosses for a pretty eating egg basket lol.

Speaking of...our son is selling his BC Marans flock. Its small 3 hens and rooster. It was a 3 year science project for him, that the international science fair board wouldnt approve for this year for a final continuation. Getting ready to deworm them, they were just re-tested NPIP in December with the farm. Will get some pictures of them when it isnt spitting/raining I figure someone here may put them to better use than listing on CL. The roo has no thumb print or other comb issues and is huge.
