Those roaches do look interesting... did you say they won't climb up the glass walls of an aquarium??
Ugh!!! I am sooo behind on posts!! I took notes, though, even tho I had to skip a few pages....

Let's seee... I was appalled by what Sawithchicks said she saw at that place she visited.... I've been to some dirty places (and will never return) but YUCK!!! That is BAD!!

Glad you threw the shoes away, oh, and so sorry about DS hand, ow!! especially on a little one, they don't understand why they hurt, it's sad

Thanks for the info on the Equine Fresh... I'm going to try it... sounds like it would work really well... I've been using straw because the birds like to scratch it and it's cheap, but I would be willing to give that a try, for sure!

Thanks for the info on culling chicks... I had read about the baking soda method but wasn't sure on the amounts, so those sites you posted (brookhavens, I think?) were very helpful...

Nice pics AyeUpChuck!! Those are the Bresse, right?? sorry they look not so well... hope you found the right thing to treat them all with...

Also feeling some envy of CelticOaksFarms place... but hey, that's what dreams are for, right?? BTW... those Blue EE's are sooo pretty... I love the Blue feathering, I think it's my fave so far...

Ditto on the trading and bartering thing... works SOOO much better than money, and is far more satisfying!!

Still depressed about my terrible hatch

, but I see several developing in the next batch, so I am just praying that these do better....

No, they can not climb smooth surfaces. I have mine in a rubbermaid tote I got from walmart. Tomorrow I plan to move them to a bigger one and combining my small one with the large colony I bought.

hmmmm.... maybe I should consider them... I personally am not a fan of bugs.... but I know my sons would LOVE them, and if they're faster than mealworms, and maybe higher protein, too?? I would consider adding a colony of them, too.... where do you get them from??

Who was it that posted a link on ebay for a hygrometer?? It was several pages back and I can't find it now??

With my experience with coons (8 total just this fall) I would suggest looking around the coop for clues. Are the chickens just beheaded? you have only found two? I found the first time I got hit by coon (5 kills in two days) the first and second where gutted, and beheaded. The other three where just ripped open for the fun of it. The other two I have found where beheaded and jutted. Just organs eaten. I didn't find one BCM. We have caught two coon, and I have the trap set with cat food (FISH variety... If I don't happen to catch the darn thing, I don't want to deepen its taste for chicken!) it killed my blue bantie cochin two nights ago. I also smoothed the ground around the coop last night to catch any tracks, and sure enough, Coon tracks around the scene of the crime again this morning. The little turd.
I am sorry for your chickens! The last coon killed my favorite lap dog cochin the last time around. That one got a quick bullet to the head. I have thought about poisoning the cat food I use as a trap, however, back in October after the five chicken raid, I caught a cat ( not lying, it was a Maine coon cat. Coincidence? I think not!)
Trapping and killing is the only sure way of ridding a coon problem. The basta.... I mean, coon Will travel 30 miles (there was a study) to get back to the woods they call home.
If it was an owl, hopefully they will move on. If you lost 5 in a short period of time, I doubt it was a raptor. They really don't kill just for the fun of it. Weasels, opossums, and dogs will though. Weasels and opossums usually shred the poor things , but i thiink they mainly leave their prey where they killed it and dogs don't have the dexterity to get a chicken out of a coop without a large amount of evidence.

They are much higher in protrein then mealworms. Try your Craigslist in the pet section. You can sometimes find someone selling off extras. If not, I can send you a small amount. May take a bit for you to get them going.

yep. He was fine yesterday but today he"s just not acting right. I went ahead and started an antibiotic. none of my other birds are feeling or acting sick, not sure what"s wrong with him

I've noticed they are prone to neurological, issues from bonks and such..At the first sign of that type of issue they get vitamin drops!!! Never lost one yet!! Sometimes it a deficiency in their food or not processing their food the right way, taking away vital nutrients...

I cooked 40 ducks eggs tonight and split it up between the 8 pens :D. Vitamins go in it too!!!
