I have an 90 year old barn that we are taking down. I could use the weathered barn siding and framing from it to make a bunch of these as the barn is two story and 30' x 40'. All I would have to buy is the treated wood for the bottom. It is 4 ft long, 2 ft wide, and 3 feet tall. It is going to be used for black copper Marans in the breeding pen. It is only used for nighttime lock up, so I think 5 could fit on the roost comfortably. I have a really rough version of this already, and two BCMs, one standard cochin roo, and three bantam Cochins all shared it with room to spare... They used it by choice, as I have another coop that they could have split up for more room. Even so, they still have like 1.5 feet of spare roost.
They will also have a decent run, and will probably still free range as soon as I get everyone split up for breeding.
The thing weighs a lot. I et you could wire the floor and put wheels on it, and it would be super awesome for mobility, since it is wicked solid. I like to rake out the bottom of it, so I left the wire off the bottom. It also will be in a run that has chain link buried to prevent diggers to get in.
Thank you! It is really nice not to have to build stuff that is fully enclosed. It made it a lot cheaper, though next time- I think I would take the 1x6 boards I have on the back, and wrap around the whole coop minus the front door, and make the egg door out of wood for a darker nesting area. I thought about mounting the nesting box on the outside of the coop to give more roost space, but this worked better. Next time I make one, and I plan on making three more (shhh, don't tell hubby) I will make some slight changes
