It is 4 ft long, 2 ft wide, and 3 feet tall. It is going to be used for black copper Marans in the breeding pen. It is only used for nighttime lock up, so I think 5 could fit on the roost comfortably. I have a really rough version of this already, and two BCMs, one standard cochin roo, and three bantam Cochins all shared it with room to spare... They used it by choice, as I have another coop that they could have split up for more room. Even so, they still have like 1.5 feet of spare roost.
They will also have a decent run, and will probably still free range as soon as I get everyone split up for breeding.
The thing weighs a lot. I et you could wire the floor and put wheels on it, and it would be super awesome for mobility, since it is wicked solid. I like to rake out the bottom of it, so I left the wire off the bottom. It also will be in a run that has chain link buried to prevent diggers to get in.
Thank you! It is really nice not to have to build stuff that is fully enclosed. It made it a lot cheaper, though next time- I think I would take the 1x6 boards I have on the back, and wrap around the whole coop minus the front door, and make the egg door out of wood for a darker nesting area. I thought about mounting the nesting box on the outside of the coop to give more roost space, but this worked better. Next time I make one, and I plan on making three more (shhh, don't tell hubby) I will make some slight changes
I have an 90 year old barn that we are taking down. I could use the weathered barn siding and framing from it to make a bunch of these as the barn is two story and 30' x 40'. All I would have to buy is the treated wood for the bottom.

Ooo...OOoo...OOOooo....  Thank you so much for sharing pictures! :weee I just figured out how to put a nest box into my greenhouse/temporary coop without a major construction project! Very nice coop, btw. :thumbsup  I wish it was warm enough here that I could get away with something like that.

I was just thinking that will work perfectly here.  Our cold is much shorter period than our heat and humidity.  I can just use haybales and clear plastic for wind blocks during the below 40 nights.  That is why I asked about the dimensions.  If I made it 8' x 4' very little wastage and cutting necessary.  I could borrow a page from DMRippy and use pallets for the back.  Thank you!!!

I used:
5 and a half 2x4x8
1 and a half 2x2x8
3 1x6x8
8 feet 36" hardware cloth
3 hinges
2 locks
1 nesting box
2x4 piece metal roofing

I swear there's a chicken under all that fur. Really!

Don't you mess with my brother!

My two marraduna basques from pastrygirl that made it :) (totally not the fault of packing! Her packing was gorgeous. I messed up

Yep, she's a bigmouth :)

Very pretty, though -- and she knows it!

With -- I think -- her brother :)

They're actually just about the same size. Did I mention how lousy my phone-camera is???

My three yokohamas, still in solitary :) (They proved to be VERY delicate -- the youngest was about 14 hours old when I first moved them from the incubator to the brooder. Two promptly died. Like, in five minutes. Just WHUMP. I nipped the survivors back into the 'bator and am waiting till they're a week old. Then we'll try again.)

Lots and lots of pretty chickies!!!

(BTW, it's not really as crowded in there as it looks. They just all twenty-odd of them have to run to the back corner whenever I open the cage...

Are Silkies not the snuggiest little things....I can't keep from letting mine sit with me when I'm watching TV in the evening.

You have some really cute chicks!!

Billie Sue,

Did you find your "stinker" in the incubator last night?

Yep - up and out. Didn't take much smelling to find it once the lid was off... There were no pips last night, but got home today to 4 little buttercups. I put 21 in lock down and took out one so a lot more to come I hope. I am worried now as I was reading that they are not cold hardy, and it was 16 degrees here this week. I may have to hatch them and ship them to someone in a warmer place. It said they were not confinement tolerant so I would not know what to do with them in the winter..... The pictures of the adults are awesome..

Ok everyone, would love to have y'alls opinion on this guy! I think he is beautiful, but I am biased. I tried to take pic from all angles. If it is not an Orp or an AM they are still pretty new to me. Not that I am not learning still on orps and Ams, but I have learned a good bit about them and what to look for.

Mine have been out in all weather as adults. They didn't like the snow when they flew out and landed in snow that was 8 inches deep but I don't use any extra heat in the coop, no insulation and the window is always cracked open and the door outside in the floor is never shut. I think you will be OK. They might not like below zero for extended times, but I think it is more what they are used to, and you might have to vaseline the combs if it is moist and cold to prevent frostbite. That is true of any large combed bird though, I think.
