Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Personally, I just keep a spreadsheet and put in whatever money I spend on the birds (and the date, helps to keep track of how much feed they go through) and how much comes in, including gas money if I'm taking a load down to the auction, but I can't accurately calculate electricity, so I just try to use energy efficient equipment where I can. I use brewer's grain to help supplement feed, plus free-range. During the summer, I have almost no feed costs, as the free-range and brewer's grain covers it, though I do get a bag of feed once in awhile (spreadsheet isn't on this computer). When I started, I also bought dozens of eggs at the auction. I'd spend $0.25/dozen eggs on most (ameraucanas and pekin ducks were more, $1.75/doz and $2.25/doz respectively) and then sell chicks at about a buck a piece or take them to auction, where they typically sell at $0.85/each. It's a risk that you get bad eggs, but for the most part, people were honest and you'd get good hatch rates (I got 8 pekin ducks out of a dozen eggs, for $2.25, then electricity). I then sold a young pullet and a drake for $20 out of that batch, shortly after I could sex them. I'll have to keep going for awhile before I see the true outcome, since this is my first year using my own breeder birds to hatch/sell eggs, so I'll have to break down winter feed costs to see if I make money in the spring. But, in general, I try to be very thrifty with feeding and maintaining my flock, which reduces costs IMMENSELY.

Another thing with POL pullets, especially in heavier breeds, is you get the males "for free". Charge enough to cover rearing for the pullets only, then add a little for profit, then you butcher out the males and they're "free" by way of having their costs covered by the pullets. Pullets here go for about $10 for unknown/older aged birds or up to $20 for a pullet of a rarer breed (silkies are huge here). Silkies cost even less to feed, lol.

Yeah but they are charging a breeders premium...which makes me expect better quality!  I can buy some rare breeds at a hatchery for $10 and that is worth the risk...but when you are talking hundreds they better be near perfect.

You are paying for rarity not quality. If that's worth it you'll be happy if its not, don't do it!

I was speaking more in terms of health then breed standard and no one can be happy with sick/dead birds :(

Maybe that is why most of the hatcheries stick with day olds?

You are right. I just know hatchery chicks get sick a lot more too, even shipped at a day old. The times i had to get a companion chick for a single hatch i had to get hatchery chicks, I always get 2 expecting one to die off. And they stay separate from everyone else but the lone chick. Its chick kindergarden and they pass stuff around.

But I'm not making excuses for sick birds. I'm just saying it is more likely to happen and they don't breed for quality. I think we are agreeing here anyway, :). I don't care WHAT they say about it not happening there, its a hatchery, its gonna happen. And they should take care of it. It seems like it is priced in to their cost of business.

Good golly was today ever an eventful day. Four kids all morning, then took the boys to my brother after watching his kids, went to the house for the inspection, got G's watch battery change, learned that the other jewelery store was robbed just before I went, then ate so much dinner at mom's house that I thought I swallowed a boulder. All while waiting to hear about his job! Talk about having fivethousand things on the mind at once! At least the dealership took him to work and picked him up while the car was inspected so that was one less thing to worry about for me. Whew! Bedtime for the old fart! I hope everyone gets their chickens in great shape!

Ayeupchuck, any news on the bresse? :(

So I didn't want to damper spirits yesterday since everyone seemed to be in such a great mood. Some beautiful birds posted! I had a long tough one yesterday.

So I had to have one of the two cockerels euthanized. He's being sent for necropsy at OSU. They'll be testing for Newcastle and Coryza and some other things.

I had blood drawn and cultures taken from a pullet. They are going to the state lab and are being tested for MS, MG and AI. I'll let y'all know what the results come back as.

Fingers crossed its something minor though after speaking to an avian pathologist for over an hour I've prepared myself for the worst. She also mentioned that if ta something major that I should be prepared for the state to show up and confiscate the rest of the birds which scares me something awful.

I just can't risk putting them out anywhere near the other birds and hoping for te best. I'm really hoping that the Denagard arrives today. It's snowing as in Portland that means people freak out. :/ you'd think it'd be no big deal but an inch of snow and people act like its a blizzard. So weird.

Anyway. I'm just thankful for everything that is good in my life. I have my health and my family and you guys! And if I'm really lucky, the bresse will be fine and if not, I start over. I still have the chicks which luckily are with broody mommas in the coop. Just have to stay positive!
I've got my fingers crossed big time for you, since I've recently gone through the same thing. They didn't confiscate ours, but we had to kill them all. It hurt. I sincerely hope you don't have to go through that.

On the other hand the state made no...repeat, NO...attempt to track where it came from, so depending on what you have they may not contact the source at all! You're in a different state, so your mileage may vary.

My best wishes in these circumstances.

Does anyone know where to get the plastic containers to put grogel in for shipping birds? Somewhere local not shipped? Like Costco? Or grocery store?

Thanks!

I've been looking for these as well for the future. It looks like Dixie Souffle Cups would work well for this. Solo makes them too. I'm not sure about the grocery store but maybe a bakery supply store....
Found a link for Home Depot of all places you might want to check if your local store carries them. You'd be swimming in cups though!

I am so tired!! I did not sleep well last night worrying about the chicks, plus I had some junk text messages at 4 AM!!!!! I jumped up thinking in was the PO calling, got my adrinaline going only to find 2 scam text messages on my phone!! I could not fall back to sleep. I am debating between staying up and going to bed a little early, or taking a nap when I get off work

Thanks for all the support btw. Y'all are really amazing peeps! I really appreciate it. I'm prepping for the worst but praying for the best. At least I know I have y'all to cry to if it goes really wrong.

Love my BYC family!
:hugs
