Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

So far Jenny just said they don't have any illness there and that no one has reported anything since June but someone else here messaged me to the contrary so I'm not sure what will happen.

It's funny but when I explain this to people and tell them that GFF have no phone number they can't believe it. Then they want to know why people would even buy from them if you can't contact them. Makes me feel naive. But there are people who have had good experiences. I just happen to be one of the unfortunate I suppose.

Would I even have any sort of recourse with them if it comes back as something serious? They give refunds if live 72 hours after delivery but what about in good health?
I would think you would have recourse. Your birds aren't sick and these haven't come into contact with them. Diseases have an incubation period and you got them sick. If it comes back bad, you will have proof and could contact the state lab for Florida to report them. It's very bad business to sell sick birds. When you sell the kinds of birds they sell, they should be tested for everything possible. And I don't understand why they don't have a phone number either except they don't want to deal with customers.

I think this thread has made me even more determined to vaccinate. There are risks with it. Found some great information here: http://live.psu.edu/story/46250 about vaccinated birds shedding the vaccine's modified strains to other birds, and of course about virus/bacterial evolution. I still think it will be best to vaccinate EVERYONE here, and total bio-security between my flock and others, of course, but also between newbies and the flock until newbies are quarantined, vaccinated and cleared. I know that evolved strains can still be passed for my birds, but I would be devastated if I lost my current flock, but I'm adding a LOT of birds this spring, and will not only have my time, money and energy invested, but quite a bit of money as well. As it is RIGHT NOW, in only my adult flock and counting only hens, I have over $300 worth of birds, and new birds will be more expensive (rarer than just production breeds that I have now). While $300 may not seem like much, it is a lot to me. Our flock was started to keep us as sustainable as possible, GOOD food that is less expensive (ehh, that might be debatable, lol) and we've fallen in love with the flock as a whole and some individuals (I hate to say that I have favorites, but I have several birds that if they were lost, we'd be distraught). So, as it stands now with the research I'm doing, it looks like we'll be vaccinating for everything we can.

I'll have to continue my research, to see if I can sell eggs to non-vaccinated flock owners, or sell my not-yet-vaccinated chicks to other locals and such, and see if vaccinated POL pullets will be restricted to vaccinated flocks only. A big part of our plan was to sell POL pullets to help bring in money, so I've got a ton of research to do yet.

But there is a reason to be angry. Yours is not the first case I've heard about when it comes to sick birds from there. I think people are afraid to say something.

Yes! I'm not even in your position and I'm angry. I don't typically anger easily, but that's just totally unethical. They are a pretty big deal nationwide, importing birds from other countries, and everyone wants GFF lines. Until this thread, I figured that with the amount of money they had in everything, that they'd be one of the most ethical breeders in the nation. To think that they are sending sick birds across the nation, EVERYONE should be angry. What if my neighbor bought some of their birds, received bio-hazardous birds, didn't quarantine (what if it's their first birds?) and a wild bird or the wind carried it to my flock? Speaking of wild birds, what if they spread crap across the nation and some endangered species catches it and spreads it to the rest of the species? It's not just a matter of bad business, sick birds being shipped across the nation is a HUGE issue.

If you want it I have a number Jenny called me from a few weeks ago.

The 21st. I have eggs going into lockdown that day so no birthday chicks for me but close at least.

Mine is the 26th! but since I was born in 81 my Dad keeps thinking it is the 21st. then it would have been 1/21/81. I have to remind him almost every year that it is the 26th, not the 21st!

I hear you. All I keep thinking is THIS is how I contribute to my family as a SAHM. I sell good quality hatching eggs and chicks. I've never really sold adults or bought them for that matter all because of biosecurity.

It's not just the money. It's that these are MY birds! Not someone else's. you can talk Jeanne/Davis etc till you're blue in the face but my BCMs are mine. I've been breeding and culling rigorously to get the stock I have. It's not the best by any means but I'm proud of them. They're part of this family. As are my favs ad OEs.

Still. Just going to keep a positive attitude and pray that everything will work itself out.
