OK I give up! I am going back to bed!!! Two of the chicks have died (the ones dragging the most egg sac) And another is so weak it won't even peep.

I got a call from my bank that there were fraudulant charges on my card this morning...a couple hundred dollars worth. So I have to deal with that too. I still need to shovel all that snow. My dogs are super hyper and driving me crazy!!

It's only fun for awhile, then the stinky butts quickly wear out their welcome. I can't wait to get them all out of the house. I have 15 in the living quarters and about a dozen in the basement. Once we move, we'll be building brooder suites OUTSIDE!

I finally got smart and put my brooder cage up on blocks. It's got a wire floor, so the droppings fall thru onto newspaper beneath. Every other day I pull out the newspaper, slide more under, and voila! No stink in the kitchen. The dust, however, is a different story -- although since I started fermenting their feed, there's been almost no dust, either :)

Now if I could just get the baby feather fluff swirling around under my kitchen table under control... lol!

ah...Ive thought about trying to make some brooder heaters out of reptile heating pads...wonder if that would work

I have wondered about that also. I have some left from raising Bearded Dragons. (amazing the things we admit to on here

) I thought about gluing them onto the underside of a home made stand that would resemble an ecobrooder. What do you think??

So sorry... If I lived close enough I would come shovel snow for you - and we could drink hot chocolate and talk chicken

yep, they are radiant heat and I think would work well. Hubby says stick them to the walls of these new brooders for radiant heat.

My hubby can build anything - He told me he thinks it would not be such a big chore to build electric chickens. I do not doubt that he can, but I think it would be #121 on his to do list. I think I could just take plywood, glue it on, use blocks and make it work.... Just have to decide which group of chicks to experiment on.....

Hard choice - if it did not work...

Hi all. My local Wal-Mart carries something similiar. They are black and the opening is a bit smaller. The overall size is close to COF's & they come with a lid & are stackable. I paid about $15 for mine and use it as a nest box. Just a thought if HD doesn't have them
Thanks, I will check them out too.

they are shaped similar to recyle bins that can be stacked also, so you might try looking at Lowes as well for similar boxes.
Ok, they go on the list..

If mounted to wood and legs put on (like making a mini coffee table with the heat pad facing down) it would work like the brinsea brooder heaters. I would test height to make sure you arent making it too hot under it.
I used a heating mat for seedlings, took a small old plastic oil pan, cut out two holes in the side and wired the heating mat along the one side - top and other side. When they were littler they would go inside - but once they got bigger they liked to sleep on TOP of it! I put burlap sack pieces on top so I could keep down the mess - but the plastic washed off easily. If anybody wants to see pictures, I can supply them - tomorrow - because I am going to a CHICKEN SHOW TODAY!!!

I don't know about glue - I think it might get hard and fall off with that close contact to heat. I took a wire and wired mine on through some holes. Also - if it didn't work - you can un-wire it - no damage to the pad.
