I agree with that completely!!  We've had -18 temps and I have not heated, mostly because I want my birds to be hardy... if they don't survive the cold, then I don't want them.. Of course, they have a coop that is protected from the wind and such, but no extra heat... Interestingly, I've only lost one chicken this winter, a hatchery RIR pullet.... survival of the fittest I guess

While I completely agree with survival of the fitest...I have no choice but to use a heat source for -40 below here! Its only a few days each winter...and mostly -30 thats an extreme weather condition and for that they need heat...when it gets above -15 -10 heaters go off...

G'morning!!!!!

Morning everyone. Well I have one more chick trying to hatch, but he has severe scissor beak. I think the hatch was cursed. I had 12 chicks hatch and 6 have died so far. I have 2 more I am not sure will make it. They just seem weak, one has a large yolk sac that he did not absorb. I am not sure what to do about the scissor beak chick. He has not finished hatching but seems strong.

"Date night" for us probably has a different meaning than for others. We are a "not quite in our 60s" couple who have a 26 year old son with Down Syndrome at home. When he has an outing and is not home, it is "date night", even if we are just working on a project at home. Last night he went up to a hockey game and we had a trip to Olive Garden (to use a Christmas present gift card) and to Target to get a couple of items. We live in a rural area, so trips to "civilization" need to be multi-purpose and Home Depot is next to the Target so........date night at Home Depot!

Sounds like to me u had some incubator issues but may not have realized it. Sounds like they didnr cook hot enough. I have mine set to fluctuate between 100-100.5. Its the perfect temp. Sorry to hear about ur hatch.

sonew - how do you prevent or minimze frostbite at those temps ???? My poor roosters are a mess, I feel soooo bad. I have been using vaseline but it really doesn't help.
