Good morning everyone.Just read this article and thought I'd start keeping track of all my expenses this year. I want see what it really costs me to keep up my addictive hobby.

I like that. Thanks! Though I am sure I am better off not knowing

Good morning all! It's beautiful here today! I'm heading outside in a bit to give a couple of my Lav Ams a thorough inspection so I can deliver them to someone later today. There are always extra boys around, and I've only been able to sell them if I have a pullet to go with them.

I created my own version of a tracking spreadsheet last week. I'm a little nervous to see how it tallies after a few months.

The cost of our hobby. But I love my chickens and could never fully get rid of all of them.

Sadly, no pips yet this am. People with Muscovy experience, how long between internal pip and external? Half of the eggs were internally pipped last night, so guessing they should pip by tonight? To quote Inigo Montoya, "I hate waiting."

Jim, you can keep that nasty stuff west of the border.

Predicting sleet/nastiness here later today, but for now it's actually quite pleasant.

And on chicken costs, yeah, pretty much know I'm spending way more money than I'll ever recoup, but I didn't get into chickens for money. Honestly I just like having them around and enjoy the stereotypical image of momma tut tutting out to the coop, sprinkling the handful of corn as the clucks come running, grabbing a few eggs from the nests. :) I work so I can enjoy my hobbies (ok, yes, and pay for my family), so ...I think I'll NOT be monitoring how much money I'm spending, hate to kill the enjoyment.

I have a rough estimate of how much i have spent on my birds over the years. I am in the negative about 3 grand. I try not to think of it. I love breeding and showing my birds, so cost and profit is the least i am concerned about.

I'm actually trying to use the spreadsheet to convince my husband that it would be "beneficial" to build me more breeding pens lol! I'll be working hard for a couple of months to show him my girls can help pay for themselves. I love my birds! :D

Marans experts: I have three of my NYDH marans from crfarms that are obviously roos. One is even crowing. Can I assume that they are all obvious by now or do I need to worry about sneaky late-developers? I have never had single-comb birds other than my Favs.

I keep hearing about your hatching massacre, but haven't read the actual story, what happened??
It was last spring. I had gotten my Ams and they had started to lay. I was hatching EVERYTHING so I could get a jump on chicks. I was splitting the Ams with Hot2Pot I could not afford them all. Anyway. It was my second hatch of them. I had SBEL and Ams and maybe something else. Had a near 100% hatch. 18 chicks 3-4 were lavenders. I was so excited to get some lavenders. Anyway it was getting late and I decided to leave them in the hatcher over night. Came in the next morning, looked at all the chicks DEAD everyone

it was 118 in the hatcher. Hubby had not come in to the shop, he was outside so I stepped out and told him and he thought I was kidding.

Why would I joke about dead chicks??????? It was a sad sad sad day. It was the END of the WHT. I may have had to do one more hatch with it. But it was replaced ASAP with a digital. The cost of losing the chicks was WAY more than the digital thermostat. It has worked PERFECT since. I have extras around just in case.... takes too long to get here in an emergency.
