Marans experts: I have three of my NYDH marans from crfarms that are obviously roos. One is even crowing. Can I assume that they are all obvious by now or do I need to worry about sneaky late-developers? I have never had single-comb birds other than my Favs.

Some are sneaky..... I often find 1 in my pullets about about 3-4 months. But once I move them to the BIG growout I can't keep a eye on them as well.

I don't know about the WHOLE year, but I think I made a little bit last year. Maybe not on paper since I bought so many eggs and birds. AS long as they pay for EVERYTHING and nothing is coming out of my personal pocket it is all good. Next year I should really show a profit. I don't plan any $600-700 bird purchases..... except for this last batch of Dottes I got the first of the year I am done. I don't want to add anymore BIG birds. Just too much trouble.

I had 2 last year that tricked me for a long time, I would have bet money on them being females.

I have a white feather legged marans pullet I hatched out of mrheinz77 eggs. I can't wait till she starts laying. She is about 4.5 -5 months old now.

Has anyone ever seen frostbite on 3 month old chicks. I had them in a cage hanging off the ground with blankets over the cage and a heat lamp and I had to still bring them in the house cause it got in the -5's and lower. I must not have got them in time cause some have what appears to be a little bit of frost bite on there toes. I have been soaking them in Epsom slat water everyday and putting antibiotic ointment on there feet but if they fall off I am afraid I have to put them down. Is there anything else I can do for them. Oh, I am also giving them vitamins and antibiotics in there water. They seem to be getting around ok and eating and drinking fine but I am worried. Never had this happen before.

Was it from my Cuckoos or bantam Marans project?

Not sure, Lol..... But I would love to get some more eggs to see if I could hatch some more. She is soooo pretty and very friendly. She's not real big so she might be a bantam

sonew - how do you prevent or minimze frostbite at those temps ????   My poor roosters are a mess, I feel soooo bad. I have been using vaseline but it really doesn't help.

I have been blessed and only once have lost a roo comb on a bantam millie fleur...i guess the airflow and them cuddling to keep warm has helped them! Idk!

I have never nor will I ever turn a profit on this chicken adventure! Cost of buildings and coops so far...4000$ ish lights...heaters...feeders...waterers...brooders...bedding...the list goes on..oh dang electric fencing 1500$ so far with more getting ordered...there have been times where it seems and feel like profit is being made but then I wake up and have to face reality! Lol as long as they pay for their feed...Ill be more than happy to spoul and love them with everything else! Haha
