Take a sharpie and trace around the red and write the time. Do this at frequent time intervals. I had a small puncture wound and ended up in serious medical trouble. I now get Cellulitis when most people wouldn't.

I'd get him to the doctor. By tracing the outline of the red, the medical professionals can see how fast the red is increasing. After you get treatment, I'll share my story, but it can get serious fast.

Does Florida have free child health insurance? Iowa has Hawkeye and Wisconsin has Badger care.

Good luck.

I am stressing out.
Yesterday my son got a puncture wound in the chicken coop from some buried chain link sticking up. I cleaned it with hydrogen peroxide and put neosporin on it. This morning it was red but not bad and I cleaned it, applied more neosporin an covered it. After I picked him up from school he was tired and feel asleep. I woke him up and realized he had a fever. I couldn't get ahold of my husband since it is a busy day at work, and we don't have insurance or any money so I didn't take him to the dr, against my guy feeling. His foot is pretty red and swollen now. I don't know if the fever and headache was connected or not, but I got the fever down. I called the nurse and she said I'd have to have him looked at, if it got worst to go to the ER, or wait until office hours tomorrow.
Should I bother waiting? This is how it looks now, after a warm bath and neosporin

The ER is a hour away, and I don't know if I am just overreacting and having a panic attack. I don't have anyone locally I could talk to or look at it for me.
I should mention I have gotten a puncture wound or two this exact way and never had any redness like that

Is the wound itself draining any liquid? Do you see any greenish or yellowish discharge? Fever is not good. That's the bodies reaction to get rid of the bad stuff.

Mark the edges of the swelling with a marker to keep track. Looks infected and you don't want it turning into cellulitis. I would say Dr definitely. Er depending on advancement of swelling.

Ouch that wound looks painful! I'd do the ER for that one.. praying for speedy healing!

Long very busy day here overhauling the big coop... finally thawed enough to clean the poop boards thoroughly, topped off the deep litter bedding on the floor and let everyone out to free range, or free for all, shall we say. Only the SFH didn't get out today. One flock at a time. Chicks are moved, have another hatch going and I've got eggs going in another one. Feeling super grateful today. Sending prayers and good wishes to everone going through bad and or overwhelming stuff right now. This too shall pass.

The fever would have me concerned. I swell up and turn red as sin if I get scratched (should see the little scratches I just got from clipping birdy nails), but never get a fever from it. I wouldn't try to bring the fever down, unless it's super high. A mild fever is the body's way of fighting off the bacterial/viral attack, and should be left to do its job, unless it's very high. It's obviously not just a reaction like mine (allergic?), but a reaction to bacteria. :/ Poor bubbies.

I don't know if it's my monitor but it looks like there is red streaking there at the bottom of the foot. I would get him to the doctor. There is a definite reaction and/or infection it looks like. Is it hot to the touch?
