So I was busy today making my new pens.... well some. These are TEMPORARY pens for quarantining, broodies, extra Roos, single matings and to find out WHO is laying those dark eggs

. I am trying to get everyone UP and these will stack and I am liking them so far, but after tomorrow I will know more wether I like them or not. They are 55 gallon barrels (Food Grade) and are laying on their side. I put a wire door on the front and feeder and waterers on each side. I have all of $8.50 in each one. I am going to get more so I can have a couple of walls of them. Right now my shop is FULL of single birds in pens. BTW these are MUCH bigger than a reg Dog Carrier.

Here is where I got the idea from. I will NEVER have this many.... I promise. There are several pics there of how he used them. Mine will be inside.

What did you have it set at? I have mine at 38. It cuts at exactly 38, drops to 37 and kicks on, so it's an average of 37.5.
I was set at 37.5 before we dropped it to 37 (mine runs hot) and the variance is .7 I calibrated it with a thermometer I trusted and it was running hot. The higher the humidity the hotter it gets, probably not really but it reads hotter.

Didn't Don, snowbird, use those for his BCMs? I actually have quite a few of those barrels handy. Maybe Ill do the same thing. I totally forgot about those! They'd be great for broodies and I have a hen that's been laying a five that I'm not thrilled about but its one of three girls. This would be a perfect way to figure out who it is!

Yeap... that is a link to his pictures. That is were I got the idea... took a LONG time to sink in. Was not sure I would like them and still not 100% but I think they will work just fine. PERFECT for quarantining!

What an awersome idea. How did you make a "gate" on the front? Galvanized wire like he did or something different?

How did you get 10ths of a degree? I can only figure out how to do whole numbers.

Did you get the same one? mine is like ST1000 or something like that. Has 4 modes. 1 for heat, 1 for variance, 1 for a compressor ???? and one for a cooler or fan. That was actually the selling point I could hook up a COOLING fan if I wanted to... never have

I had some cattle wire 2 x 4 welded wire left from my breeding pens. I used HOG CLIPS to hold it to the plastic. Just drilled a hole and clipped the wire in the hog clip or pen.... Then I bought some rubbermade takealong plastic storage things. They hold 5.2 cups of what ever and I attached them one on each side. I put the bung hole to the SIDE and I am going to use the hole to feed and water through, if it works. I did have to put a wood brace under the feed and water things. Over all pretty easy to make. Hubby used a reciprocating saw to cut the holes. We have use a jig saw but it was slower.

I will get some pictures if anyone wants to see them.

GOOD NIGHT... got to get out of the house by 9... I am not usually up by then

Okay, I have a question.  What causes cross beak?  Especially in one breed.  I put down my 5th Partridge Barthuhner today for cross beak.  Looking at the bunch I just got last week and there is one in there that needs to be put down.  Not one issue in any of the other breeds I have running around.

Use food coloring to mark who is laying what egg and see if it is coming from one girl or if you need to change you boy. Hope its an easy fix.

I think they both lay a light brown egg.

My breeze just started laying. One of her eggs was brown. I don't know if she is trying to freak me out or some of the gff stock have brown egg genes. I suppose I will know in a week.

I don't know, I thought it was. I don't know the password. They stayed here before so, who knows..... Yes, I have a wireless router. But I thought they had to live within range. If they have it how can I stop them.

Sent pm. By sounds like you have fixed stuff.
