Good morning all, my lovely wonderful wife took a batch of chicks out of the hatcher last night, while I was crashing on my chair really to tired to mess with it. They were several fluffy little chicks, very excited that we set 4 Silver Penciled Rocks and all 4 hatched. Yeh so while my Orps are not cooperating at the moment hopefully we will be able to start sending out SPR orders in the next month

, One hen is brrody but hopefully not to much longer..... Counted last night and we have 2 Rhode bar Cockerels and 2 Pullets so sounds like one good trio with a back-up plan(about 11 weeks old). We also have one lone Icelandic with a cute little mohawk. 4 absolutely gorgeous SFH, that I think were Papas(also about 11 weeks old). We have one Choco Wyandotte that is all alone. Several Australorps, I may have hatched to many sells are down this year. Many, Many more that we need to inventory also.

No idea. We have what are called "broody huts". My DH does not like tie outs of any kind, b/c of the damage it can cause to a leg.

I believe those are little houses that the game cock lives in. Each house will have one cock to it. These are birds that will fight other birds if given the opportunity so they are spaced just far away enough so that the cock can't get to it's neighbor.

Your exactly right. There are roosters that will break their leg to get at another one. They just call it a "hard loss" and destroy the injured bird.

I have seen those drum's used as bantam houses though, with alot of success. The runs that surround them are circular and have plywood tops with roofing on it.
I have also seen cheap kitchen flooring glued to the tops as roofing too...lets face it, I live in TN, they will use anything to make a run.

Tolbunts, Jubilees, Olandsk, d'Uccles, Leghorns.....eye candy! I agree, the d'Uccles were my favorites until I got my first Legbars! Their personality is even sweeter!

I have to agree with you. My Calico Cochin Bantams that are in grow out are absolutely beautiful. My one little Olandsk is also in there and gets lost. LOL I have to look for smallest and no feathers on the feet to be able to find her (hopefully.)

Would one of you turkey enthusiasts answer a couple of questions for me?

How soon can you sex them and what is the first obvious difference? My Lilac Turkey has a small bump like a wart on the face above the beak and has had since birth. Is this normal, or something to be concerned about? Thanks

just wanted to let those that claimed laced brahmas from me that they have started laying. I will be separating them by color this weekend. I hatched out the first chicks from them this last week. If anyone doesn't mind getting a mix of the laced brahmas for their swap let me know soon. I can fill a couple of swaps with them from the mix pen. The hatch I did from these hatched buff and gold laced so far.
Once separated this weekend I will start collecting from the individual color pens to start with swaps starting with corancher's

My lavender orpingtons have also started back up and I am slowly filling those swaps along with my main pen of coronation sussex!

the guineas have not started laying yet.
the speckled sussex are being VERY sporadic and not cooperating to fill a full swap. I had been sending partials with other swaps but hopefully they will kick in gear.
Anyone with the double blue laced barnevelder swaps, it will be more into summer as I lost the cockerel and have been trying to find one, not easy. Madam was gracious enough to sell me a blue along with some splash barnies for this pen but he needs to grow.
I will be moving the black copper marans hens out of the lavender orp pen soon. I have almost all of those swaps completed. Just waiting for the last ones to be ready for them so I can get them back to their own breeding pen.

The wart is normal that is the snood. The only way I know to early sex them is the strutting. SME boys will put their wins down like a serama and strut. Mark those suckers.

Also later if you get tassles on boys or some girls, perfectly normal. Its not screwed up feathers on the middle of the chest.

You can take a pretty good guess at sexing fairly early on. All of your turkeys should have a small bump on their head. It is called a snood. If the bird is female, it will stay pretty small and stand kind of upright on her head. If it is is male, it will grow longer and longer as he ages and hang down one side of his face. So, a bump is a happy and healthy turkey!! Sometimes, they are harder to see when they hatch....this usually means a little hen. If you have more than one turkey, compare the bumps on their heads and the boys are often larger and fatter. The male will usually be larger and may strutt, but my little hens have done that as well at a young age. Send a picture!!! One of us can probably guess based on age.
