susan, I have heard that you could put them in a cage that is hanging from the ceiling, something about the cool air on their hineys and the twirling of the cage breaks them...I don't know if it works or not, I have only had broody turkeys

I read somewhere that you can dip their hiney in a bucket of ice water.... I would say that would break what ever mood I would be in at the moment.

HA! Too funny! Maybe tomorrow I'll have to take a bucket out with me tomorrow and check on her.

I tried Ice Packs under my SLW.... nothing. They just kept sitting. I find moving them to a new pen breaks them better than anything else I have tried. Put them with a new roo or just a new pen with other chickens. I have even broken a broody by taking her from the nest box and walking around with her and then putting her back in the same pen but in the run. Not sure why that worked the first time but it did once.

I would gladly take any take any broody hens anyone has they can hatch eggs to their hearts content up here In Alaska!
Gahh! Noisy is named that for a reason, loudest chicken I have, I bet I could still hear her from here if I shipped her north. But she lays the nicest blue green eggs, they won a blue ribbon at the fair last year!

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

Turns out the hospital has guest access! Whodathunk? But I can keep up today instead of coming home to a thousand posts.

Hope your day is awesome!

Good morning peeps!! Just a friendly reminder to please keep an eye on post #2 of the swap thread. If any questions, please ask my PM!!!!

To break a broody we have a 24x24 rabbit cage that is on legs. All wire and bottom is open so nothing covering it. 4 days in it and they are usually broke. I have one I need to break, just haven't gotten to it yet.

I love the Hubs, really I do. Sunday he collected eggs for me, we didn't collect on Sat as I was gone all day for a fiber arts show and we ran out the door for dinner plans as soon as I got home. I had a second broody, my EE Noisy, and for some reason, she decided the eggs were nicer in the next nest box over and moved and left her 5 eggs behind. Dear Hubs collected the 5 eggs and brought them in for me, which I hadn't had a chance to mark, I usually do. So consequently, when I went out today and saw her in the next box over, I ran in and candled the eggs. 5 sadly no longer going little eggs.... Sigh. I'm just going to try and break her broody, she's one of my best layers and I want her eggs back.

Anyone got good ways to break a broody? I locked them out of the coop into the run this afternoon, hoping if she can't get to a nest box she'll change her mind.
My Welsummer broody hopped boxes this weekend, too, right after I gave her a bunch of eggs that were set to pop.

luckilly I found them and rushed them in to the incubator. I broke the golden rule of lockdown and candled to see if they were still going and saw movement in several (whew) and several were pipped this morning!!!!! what a relief. but she was out running around with the rest this morning so I think the best way to break a broody is to give her 21 day eggs...

Some of my chickens refuse to use the nest boxes and every time I find where they are laying they change to somewhere else. This one must have found a pretty good hiding place. She showed up Sunday with chicks in tow. This is my second hen to go broody on a clandestine nest of eggs and then show up with chicks. These chicks had to be sired by my Mille Fleur d'Uccle cock. He is the only feather footed cock in my flock.

well they are cute little buggers!!!! I am such a softy for a momma and her chicks...I love they way they cluck to them and call them to show them how to find food

that being said, I am now so afraid of this happenning now that I can never let a chicken leave our premisis. I am always scouring the woods for hidden nests. and count every chicken when I put them in for the night...not that I'd know what to do if one was missing...
