Hatching Eggs / Paypal CHAT Thread

Okay, guys, and please tell me gently if I am asking way too much......

I see offerings that 'look' promising but if they are just the same chicks I can get for 85cents at the feed store than I am not inclined to go to the trouble and incubator space, etc. And, I know this is not for "show" quality stock parents per se as many of the really fun breeds and varieties are not APA anyway. But, like my Ancona ducks and bantam Barnevelders, there is still an ideal to aim for and defines what one would cull from their own program -- assuming they had enough breeding stock to actually be selective. I would like to ask, please note I don't by any means mean demand or require, etc., that if your offering is of high-end type breeder eggs that you be upfront and let us know. It would definitely make me more inclined to jump in try maybe hatch something that I don't have now. If the breeder stock is production or hatchery bred there is nothing wrong with saying so because to someone that might just be the ticket! I just personally prefer exhibition and extreme style in type =:~) Please don't hang me on the cyber noose, I am really just a kitten at all of this.... Thanks.

You can be assured that any birds I keep will be BQ/SQ, I do not breed anything I would be embarrassed to exhibit in a show. I'll have to keep an eye out for when you offer the ancona ducks :)

That's how I pack mine too. I only write Fragile all over the box, and I send them in the SMALLEST box I can fit them in. I think it is easier, cheaper, and less likely to get smashed up than the big boxes. JMO, but it seems to work.

Based on my shipping experience from UPS, I agree with this tactic. Smaller, thick cardboard (or even doubled cardboard) boxes, packed like how crazychickenlady does, will sliiiiiide right through all the processes and machinery (ramps, rollers, etc). It's VERY true that people who work with packages Don't Have Time to look other than the side of the box where the address label is placed. Marking "Fragile", and "This Side Up" (if appropriate), and even the much-debated "Hatching Eggs" (I prefer "Live Embryos") on the side with the label is vital.

Just my

DMRippy,

I candled my EE eggs from you. Of 10, 7 look great, and 1 is questionable. 2 of them had no development. I'm very pleased

and excited.

I just candled my bantam olive egger eggs from gamebirdsonly. This is a first for me. Never before have I received 100% intact (no broken or cracked) AND 100% growing. That's right! EVERY EGG IS GROWING! All of them! Only once have I gotten a 100% hatch on shipped eggs, but I only counted eggs set, not eggs shipped because several of them were broken in shipping. THANK YOU GAMEBIRDSONLY!!!! Your eggs and packing are awesome! 18 eggs and every one of them is growing! And get this, they're only on day four! They are growing so well I can see them even through those awesome olive shells (using a very bright flashlight). WOOT!!

Most of us that have been on BYC for awhile know what type and quality of birds many of the members have. I can see where a new person would like to know. I think the best approach would be just to ask either by sending a PM to the person that has the eggs or just post the question on the swap. The eggs may be claimed before you get a response back but then you will know for future reference. I don't think most people would be offended by you asking if you say you are trying to improve your lines and prefer birds closer to the Standards.

In the fast pace of swapping sometimes we forget that not everyone is aware of who has what type of birds. We also use abbreviations that not everyone knows what is being offered. Maybe we can all try to be a little clearer when we make our offers.
