Hatching in Classrooms

Awwwwwwww! How long until the classroom hatch? I'm sure they are all excited

are you doing a draw to determine who gets what eggs? What breeds are being hatched? Keep us updated

There are 15 students and 42 eggs. So i had them just pick the one they want to watch. The eggs are due to hatch November 18! They don't have school on Mondays but the Teacher and I are going in there the 17th to set up the brooder. It'll be easier when they aren't there. Plus there might be a couple early hatchers that we can peek at! The kids love their journals and some have started "taking notes". They try to write and a teacher or volunteer translates for them! There is one kid that thinks maybe the chickens will be the same color as the egg when it hatches! Their little brains are working hard here! It's awesome watching them try to figure out what will happen next! I only gave them general info and we go over what is happening in the egg once a week.

OH! I forgot! Bantam Cochins are 21 of the eggs, Buttercups are 3, and 3 cream legbar. Those are pure bread. These next ones have an EE daddy. 3 Black Copper Maran, 3 Black Australorp, 4 Rhodebar, and 5 Amber White.

This is a wonderful variety for the kids. They were very excited and confused that there were so many different colors and sizes of eggs!

A lot of these kids thought there was only white eggs and white chickens like "the ones in the commercials" (foster farms ones) Some of them thought they were either fake or dyed. I plan to break open one of my eggs and a store egg to show them the yolk color difference. It surprises a lot of people.

Great so far! No drops!

Today the kids came out to our house to see the farm! We own a Christmas tree farm, have a garden, fruit trees, tractors, a horse, 2 dogs, cats, 13 chickens, 5 guinea fowl, and 3 turkeys.

We showed them our wreath making machine and how to make a wreath, explained the trees, went to explain the tractors but they wanted to see the trees so we moved on pretty quick. We got to the trees showed them the different sizes and then FINALLY, the animals!

They were very excited but I told them my birds don't like loud. So we used inside voices. They loved the turkeys and were surprised that the girls didn't say gobble gobble. They liked that my chickens were different colors but were concerned with all the feathers on the ground (molting here a LOT). I showed them one chicken who is still pretty but is starting to molt. She is a SLW and appearently when I picked her up she lost a tail feather. One little boy tried to give it to me so I could "put it back so she doesn't get cold" Very thoughtful! I showed them the nest boxes and one hen was laying her egg. After they saw her egg we went and picked squash and some tomatoes to take back with them.

Then EVERYONE had to go potty! Thank god I have 3 bathrooms! They all got on the bus and I followed them with their wreath and veggies to the school. They were very cute and sang me a song that they adjusted on the bus. Cassie and Ken have a farm EIEIO and on their farm they have a _______...... LOL They inserted everything they noticed that we own!

It was a blast and they are coming back in the spring when the eggs they hatch are grown and we are planting new trees and seeds.

I sooooo wish you lived in my area so I could take my class to your farm!!!!! So much fun

We told the school all ages are welcome to come out to the farm. We think all kids should learn about different types of farms and the different ways people get food. My favorite comment today was when I brought them into our 10x20 shed where my wreath table and tree farm supplies are. I told the kids "this is my office! Welcome!" One kid looked at me laughed and said that I was funny and that this isn't an office it doesn't have heat!

These kids are great!

We hit a bump yesterday. One of the kids is having issues keeping out of the incubator. He grabbed a couple eggs and not gently. So I'm coming back Monday to tape down the incubator. I don't want to take it away because of one kid but I will have to figure out something else. The other kids were very upset and some were even almost in tears because they thought I'd take the eggs home to hatch. I will build a box with a lock on it if I have to! Other than that the kids are doing great! They are very anxious for the babies to hatch.

How awful! I wonder why he did that! Have you candled the eggs, have any died through heat loss because of it? Hmmm, if you don't get a box, get a cheap suitcase and padlock the zippers together! Hopefully that will be the last bump in the road :jumpy
