Have I Stuffed Up?

Uh oh, I feel another addict in the making!

My husband laughs at me because I try to watch a tv show, and "only" check the eggs every commercial!

Oh wow - FOUR days! Crumbs! No sleep at all for me then! 2.5 hours since I spotted the pip and I must have checked at least every 10 mins since then! (You think I jest??) Haha! Thank you for your reassuring presence!  @RubyNala97

I hatched dozens of batches of chicken eggs (and peafowl & quail eggs) and then decided to try call duck eggs. It was like I had never hatched a thing in my life. I felt so much pressure to get those little babies out alive. I seriously text messaged every duck hatcher 20 times a day! Yes, my hatches lasted 4 days (from internal pip to zip). Call ducks are notorious for needing help hatching, plus they were shipped eggs. With all of them I had to help every step of the way, so no sleep for 4 days!! Lol.

Then I had some local call ducks eggs and all but 2 hatched fine without any help and I still couldn't sleep! You'll get some rest after the hatch is over...:gig

You are so right! And I spent last evening doing exactly the same as you - nipping to the laundry every time there was an advert on tv! Meant to ask you, how are your eggs now?

The first pip still looks the same, which I guess is normal? But I've woken up this morning to find a second egg has a pip! And interestingly, neither of them are the 2 eggs where I spotted the wrigglers on Tuesday evening! I so understand the old saying of counting chickens (or ducks!) before they hatch!

I know exactly how you felt! I'd got so much planned for today, as I don't have the baby granddaughter to care for, but the shopping and even the trip to the coffee shop, can wait as I have something WAY more important to do! Lol.

As you may possibly have seen on wvducklady's reply, I was so excited when I got up this morning, to find that I have a second egg pipped! How excited am I!!

I didn't see any sign of internal pipping on any of the eggs on Tuesday night, so in the last twelve hours I have these two external pips... how long would the average time be from now? I realise it's not an exact science, but just a rough idea so I am ready if it starts taking too long?

@Sunnyducks 2 pips now, that's great. And even better if they are in ones that you weren't sure about.

Pip to zipping out can take anywhere from 12-48 hours. 40+ is not uncommon and not worrisome. 12-24 is more likely. Sometimes they will even sort of make a second pip, then rest some more. So unless you start seeing brown membranes (if a piece of the shell actually pops off) then you really don't need to worry until it starts pushing 2 days. Sorry, but ducks take their own sweet time. :fl

I have my first pip. I've been gone for over 12 hours today, so I have no idea how long it has been pipped, but its a good strong pip, and I can hear it chirping. So we should have some hatch together! :)

So happy for you! I forgot, like wv mentioned, the ducks tend to make a big mess of the pip before starting to zip. The can punch out a couple holes, it looks really sloppy and like they may be having trouble but it's totally normal. Hope tomorrow morning both you & Wv have some chicks/ducklings!!

Thank you @WVduckchick again for your advice - glad yours are pipping too. Fingers crossed we both have lots of joy later! My first pip is a little bigger than before, so he's still in there ok. I haven't needed to open the lid yet so I haven't heard any peeping from mine. Hopefully my humidity drops so I have an excuse later

. I have to correct myself - one of the pippers actually is one that had a wriggler in - couldn't read my own writing!

I shan't stop watching them of course!
