Have Just Put Eggs In Tonight 9th August 2011, Anyone Want To Join?

Aw man, I'm sorry that you dropped one. :-(

You have a lot more confidence in your ability than I do in mine. I'm fairly sure that one egg is not developing, and yet I didn't toss it. Seriously, why can't I make a definite decision? Or, more importantly, how come they couldn't all be obvious winners like my dearly departed rogue egg?

I haven't tossed any of mine yet either, I am waiting even to toss the clear one til I candle again at 10 days. I just want to give them every chance I can to develop.

I candled at 4 days and saw 3 were developing, I candled again a coupla days later and discovered that actually 4 were developing. So thats why I'm still holding on to them anyway.

I toss them because I was going to be gone for 2 days and my mother in law was going to be doing the turning duties for me. I didn't want an explosion while I was gone. I did eggtopsies on all of them after I made the decision, just to check myself and all (except the one I dropped of course) had no development. one was nasty and runny yucky, so I feel pretty confident in my assumption that they were not going to develop. The temperature in my homemade incubator is still fluctuating to much for my comfort, but not nearly what it was before I made my modifications. I am going to move the thermostat a bit closer to the bulb as soon as I get home this afternoon.

Just finished candleing with my daughter and neighbor girl. There was supposed to be 11 eggs only found 10, my broody must of broke another. 1 for sure did not develop (totaly clear) and we removed it and it was a stink bomb

.

The others I'm really not sure on. I could see air sack and the rest was dark, and some were darker than others. It is day 11, I'm not sure what is good or a blood ring. I keep reading the sticky posts on candling but I'm not sure. I think I saw some move.

Would a blood ring kinda float inside the egg and move as you rotate the egg? I think I needed a brighter light source.

I guess I will have to wait and see what hatches. I hope the broken eggs did not ruin the rest.

Patman, what color are your eggs? I've seen the bacterial ring in the threads, but I don't know that I could identify it in real life on my own.

I'm having a tough time with candling. I did remove one of the light eggs a couple days ago because it was completely clear. Cracked it open, and there was nothing developing. What was weird was that the yolk wasn't intact; it was almost like it was scrambled from the inside. Is that the start of it going bad maybe? I dunno.

My greenish/blue eggs are almost completely impervious to the light. I think that I see veining right at the bottom by the light, but they're just so dark I don't think I'm getting a good look.

I think I'll try candling again tonight, but at this point, I figure I won't see anything from the darker eggs, and can maybe make a decision on the other lighter colored egg.

I definitely saw a chick moving around in the egg that got crushed a couple weeks ago. It was so obvious that it was good that it makes me wonder if it's always obvious and this batch isn't good.

they are all white. White Leghorns eggs. The more I read and look at the all the pinned info I'm sure some are growing and the others I'm just not sure. I guess I can candle again in a few days and if they are not soild then i will know they are no good. Does this sound like a good plan???

Sounds like an awesome plan to me!!

I've noticed the lighter colored eggs are much easier to candle. I have a super bright LED flashlight that seems to work ok on the lighter eggs. One of my EE lays a very pale egg, and hers are pretty easy to candle, as well as my leghorn. The leghorn egg (#5) was the one I threw out a few days ago.

So, I just got back from candling. 6 eggs left.

#2 still can't see a blasted thing.
#3 pretty sure I saw movement, definite veining
#4 I can see *something*, but it looks more like day 4 or so. No veining, kind of a c curve shaped object. I will give this one til wed or thur and if it still looks the same, I'll crack it open and see if I was right.
#6 pretty sure I saw movement, and there was definite veins
#7 could see veining, but very, very dark
#8 ditto- thought I saw veining, but very dark

I'm confused about this one at the moment, its a ring of veins all round the egg but blood rings I have seen in pics have all been a solid line, not a ring of obvious veining. Any comments would be handy as I don't know whether to chuck it or not.

This next one is definately good, it wiggles all over the place when I candle it:

And this one looks clear in the pic but next time I candled it, it had the obvious embryo, so must have been hiding. I have 2 with an obvious embryo but they don't wriggle like the one I'm sure about, they just seem to be still all the time, they still seem to be developing so I'm not really sure if they are alive or not?

I am no expert by any means... but comparing yours to mine and the pics in the sticky posts for 11 day chicks I would say pics 1 & 3 are no good. 4th pic I would take a wait and see method.
