I've done lamps and plate. For small amounts of chicks (<12), I prefer the plate, and a small (4x6) brooder box. For larger numbers of chicks, I like lamps and a larger brooder (5x12)

Are you able to regulate the heat pad?
Make sure the chicks can move off the pad to be cooler and not burn their feet. Regulating the heat source is very important.
