Have heat available if they need it....but they should be able to get away from it too.
Better to go by behaviors than temp numbers.

I agree that it is probably better to go by behaviors. I had a thermometer in my brooder as a backup, which sent the temp to my base station in the house.

A thermometer is good for reference, especially for beginners...I still use one on occasion.
