My budgie had prolapse She hung on from Feb 28th-April 6th but passed in the end.

Hi Baldie,
A quick word of encouragement. I had a prolapse situation like this last week, and posted about it ("help chicken's insides coming out (photo)" and you can read about it there if you search "insides coming out peaceful".
My hen is back with the flock and doing ok. although she is laying (and I realize has been laying) deformed eggs. I will keep an eye on her.
So I washed her rear with warm water and smeared some honey on it. I couldn't push the prolapse back in but it went in by itself over time. Be careful with prep H, I read there are different types(?) and one is bad. I believe the goal is to lubricate and KY jelly is suggested often. I didn't have any of that stuff so I used warm water, honey, time, and once on the second day some special calendula cream I had from the naturopath.
best of luck! You can PM me if you have more questions...

is it possible prolapse situation happen to baby chicks, i had 1 week old baby had something on her butt, I found it yesterday and dont know what to do

The tissue in that area is extremely sensitive and will swell with the least irritation. If your chick had poo stuck to its butt, even a little, it could cause a real problem. You would have to be extremely gentle washing it off.

Swelling is not really a prolapse, but will cause problems because the other chicks will peck it until it bleeds and then not stop at all.

I smear thick vaseline AROUND the opening and it seems to discourage picking.... the chicks don't like it sticking to their beaks.
Dab the swollen area gently with a cotton ball moistened with cold water. It should help get the swelling down. Avoid chemicals if you can.
Give it a day or two before you do anything else. As long as there is progress with the swelling going down leave it alone and watch carefully.
I have used vaseline at the very first sign of picking on any part of the chicks and have had really good luck with them stopping.

Good Luck!

Hi everyone! Well, I have only the same news. I keep pushing it back in and it keeps coming back out. She is still in a dark place. I am not sure what to do now, do you all think it still will go back in?? It seems to be taking so long and I just don't want her to be suffering. It looks like she may have been picking at it today also.

I read somewhere that this can take some time. I don't know much about it, but know it can be labor intensive. I think she may just need some more time. Hopefully one of these times, soon, it will stick in there. Keep your chin up, you're doing great! She's one lucky hen to have a mama like she does!

Thanks! It is quite the job being a chicken mom! I am just glad we found it before the other chickens noticed it. I will keep doing what I have been doing and hope for the best.

Hi there. I have been reading your posts and your problem is indentical to mine. About 4 weeks ago, the same thing happened to my Black Australop. It has been a long journey. I cared for her day in and day out cleaning, applying Prepartion H, pushing her vent back in. It is very time consuming but I had to do it being as though all of my animals are pets. After 2 weeks being inside my home in a bathroom and inside a large dog kennel and in the dark, she finally was "healed" or at least I thought. I let her loose back in the flock. Well guess what happened, the next day? Prolapsed vent AGAIN!! I worked with her AGAIN. I was determined that she would be healed. Today is week 4 and it's still the same. It goes back in while she is inside but when I let her back out, she tries to lay an egg and it's out again. I know that you love your chickens and I know that they are pets but there is only so much we can do. I have read that some people have had this problem with their chickens about 2 weeks. For me it's been 4 weeks. I am sad to say but now I am thinking about culling her. I DO NOT want to do that but I'm not sure how much longer this will continue. She is in no pain. She eats, drinks, poops and everything else but I wonder what kind of life is this for her being inside all the time in a dark area, so that she can't lay an egg in fear of her venting popping out again. I could just cry at the thought of culling her but I'm at my rope's end. I have never culled any of my chickens and I really don't want to. I know that some chickens are able to recover from a prolapsed vent and are fine but some aren't. I think that mine will never recover and I'm sad at the thought. If she is not better in another week, then I will have no choice. That will be 5 weeks. I think that I have done my best in trying to help her. I don't know what else to do. Sorry for your chicken. I hope that she fully recovers. Keep us posted.
