Hello all! I'm brand new to this forum but not forums in general. But I am very new to chickens. So new, that I don't actually have any yet. I'm planning to purchase chicks in the spring after taking the winter to a) design and build a coop, b) read up on breeds, and c) learn as much as I can.

I'm a 29 year old stay at home mom of 6 year old twins. I also babysit to supplement income. I have an MBA that's currently collecting dust in a drawer because both of my girls are special needs so staying home works out better for everyone and luckily my husband works at a stable enough job that I can do that. In my free time, I read, knit, and play World of Warcraft.

A big reason I'd like to have chickens is to have an outdoor hobby, have fresh eggs, and know where my food is coming from. My husband got into hunting last year but has been fishing for ages. We try to eat meat that we harvest as much as possible. I've gone hunting a few times myself with no luck so I'm hoping to supplement this way. Plus, I like new challenges.

Beyond the human residents, we have two dogs and a cat.

Tamland, 9 years old, female Maine Coon mix cat who is grumpy and acts older than she is:

Bailey, 4 years old, female Border Collie mix who is dumber than a bag of hammers (she literally forgot how to eat one day):

Leela, 1 year old, female Chihuahua/Rat Terrier mix who is a rocket and very intelligent. I have a feeling I'll be Leela-proofing any chicken coop I make:

You're doing the best thing studying up and planning before you get any chicks! There is a lot of helpful information in the Learning Center (you can find it under the tab labeled "Articles", here's just one that might be of particular interest to you:
how-to-raise-baby-chicks-the-first-60-days-of-raising-baby-chickens.47691

And here's a link to take you to the Coops section, lots of ideas to be gathered from there:

Make yourself at home here and always feel free to ask questions, join in the conversations, etc.

Glad you are doing your homework first! I spent my whole first winter on BYC planning and researching. You are doing what you are called to do right now, raise your children. That MBA will wait until a more advantageous time to be put to use! Many folks put their general location in their profile. It helps folks to connect and give climate specific advice.

Hello and nice to meet you.:frow

It's wonderful that you are doing research before you get your birds.
I see most of the others have suggested some very helpful info.
May I add that your feed should also be predator proof and rodent proof.
I had a metal barrel with a locking lid to prevent rodents from getting in the feed.

Howdy:welcome:frow Happy:yato have you join the family. Enjoy your time here!:)
Don't worry 'bout the MBA piling up dust...twins are #1. for any consolation it may bring, I have a M.S. in Marine Biology and it's never gott'en wet. :lau I have some fantastic reef aquariums though.;)

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us:ya Once you get your layers up and going you may want to consider meat birds... You can grow enough chicken to feed your family for a year, in just 8 short weeks—but you'll need a lot of freezer space.
