About 25 years ago I had about 10 chickens that would free range and coop at night. We had a few disappear in the night and we gave the rest to a neighbor. Since then, I have been on the retail side of chickens and farm animals and recommending everyone check out BYC for all of their chicken needs. I no longer work in retail and have time to devote to a good size flock. My boys have been wanting something like this for a long time too, so they are going into the egg business. Today, I called the hatchery and placed my order for babies.
Next Thursday we will be receiving 30 ISA Browns, 10 Black Australorps and 10 White Leghorns (all Pullets). We will be putting them into a custom brooder with brooder plates in our garage while we convert an old carport into a coop. I used this carport for a fish farm I had back in 2014 so it is overrun with weeds and will be a lot of work at the start. I will be running hardware cloth around the exterior with a skirt to prevent digging and hot wire ran around a perimeter. There will be an enclosed area for them to roost during storms or really cold nights, and we will be adding a very large run that is secured to protect them from predators. We are located in Central Florida in Dunnellon and will be taking advantage of the climate to get things done. I think the hardest part will be building a coop strong enough to keep them safe during hurricanes.
We are very eggs-cited to be bringing the flock back and we are looking forward to spending time with them. We know we have a lot of work ahead of us to get where we want to be and we have a lot of plans that we want to make happen for spring. I am looking forward to being a member of this community and seeing what can be learned from others.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

You're doing a good job prepping for your new flock! We have a Learning Center and doubtful you'll need to learn much but it's worth a gander to see if an article pops up that might be helpful to you. These are all written by our members.

We also have a Coop Forum, and you could scroll through and see as some have certainly been built to withstand weather to include hurricanes.

Lastly, here is your Florida thread. You might ask for pointers in there as well.

We're glad you're here!
