not true for everyone- your caloric needs depend on your height/weight/fitness level. Follow this link to calculate how many calories you need to MAINTAIN your current weight.

http://www.my-calorie-counter.com/calorie_calculator.asp#

By consuming less than your maintenance calories along with burning calories you will be loosing weight. One pound of body fat is equal to approximately 3500 calories. To lose one pound per week, you might decrease your required calories by 500 per day or burn 500/per day or a mixture of both.
(-500 calories X 7 days per week = -3500 calories)

Yep.... that 1500 calorie per day cutoff point number is most likely the average for many people who are on a weight loss program. I was told it was 500 calories at one time. So thats how much the ""industry"" has changed, over the years.

The point i think is you need calories to fuel the machine. The machine senses a famine and it shuts down. It starts hanging on to every bit of fuel it needs to consume. Thats why exercise is an important component to all of this as a tool to keep your metabolism guessing. So the bigger you are the more you need to fuel the machine. Therefore a calorie amount that would cause me to loose weight would cause some to gain.

Its also important to reassess the calorie needs as you loose weight especially in my case because I have 219 lbs to loose. I cant just jump down to 1500 calories right now because that would cause me to go into starvation mode. But at one point I will be where 1500 calories will be a maintenance level and I may have to go lower to continue weight loss.

But I think it good as well to look at the whole picture.

Stress levels:

With me I am dealing with three senior citizens, Grandma 95, Mom 77, and my Roommate 66..... Oh wait there is a fourth.... ME 56.

Boredom levels:

Need a job.... anyone need a Fluffy Designer?

activity levels:

Partially a stressor for me because I have arthritis in my knees and it hurts to walk. I don't do swimming because they wont allow shorts in the pool. And I will be darned if I will go out and buy a 5x swimsuit. I laugh but I just cant make myself go there.

fatigue levels:

Getting enough sleep has been an issue for me since high school. I run on between four and six hours for several weeks then crash for about 24.

how much water has been consumed:

Often times when we think we are hungry we are simply thirsty. One of the Weight Watcher techniques which has stuck with me is If i am hungry for no reason Go have a glass of water, Then reassess weather or not you are really hungry.

Another thing to keep track of are body measurements. I have to do this now that I actually weighed myself for the first time in about three years. Its another way to gauge success without getting on the scales. Also if you are exercising and gaining muscle the muscle actually weighs more than fat, so if you are loosing fat and gaining muscle you may have NO weight loss. But you WILL be loosing inches. For me this will come when I am able to move more.

Aaaannnndd ...... Weighing only once per week at the same time per day wearing approximately the same clothing every time is the only way to gauge at home your loss in pounds. Simply because day to day fluctuations in weight can be as much as five pounds depending on a whole bunch of factors.

someone else suggested for her to cut down to 1000 cal a day... thats insane and will drive the body right to starvation mode... and will cause a stall and do more harm then good... unless under medical supervision one should not go below 1500cal

and perchit.girl... I was a 5X when I was at my highest I did get in that bathing suit.. I only went to the "adult swims" I am now a 3x sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do and if the pool allows you to exercise then thats what you do...

if you have sleep deprivation that will also stall weight loss... do you have sleep apena?

Yep I have Apnea.... and I do know what it does... Heart Blood pressure weight gain... and on. My insurance wouldn't pay for the machine though. Gotta love them HMO's. (sarcasm intended)

And NO I will not be doing 1000 calories.... LOL. What I am going to do is watch my net-carbs and keep it low (still need to figure out my target range) while keeping to 1900 - 2000 calories for now. That's projected for a 2 lb weight loss per week. Which just about .5 percent per week. For now. As you and I both know the more weight you have to loose the quicker it comes off initially.

WRT exercise. I do get some. While its painful for me to walk I do tend my Guinea Fowl and Horse and Goats. Once a week I lift a 135 lb bale of alfalfa onto a wagon and drag it in the goat pen..... with the Goats Helping.....

. The horse gets a bale of Bermuda every two and a half days. Thats a 110 lb bale brought off the pile and lifted end over end till it gets into her feeder and then tipped in her feeder..... and of course the horse helps too.....

. With the Guineas I have to walk through the goat yard to get to them and that's an adventure in of itself. It doesn't seem like much but about three months ago I couldn't walk from my car to the Coop without having to rest as soon as I got there. My knees lock up if I stand too long but moving seems to keep them moving.... LOL. And all I need is a moment to catch my breath and let cramping muscles relax and I can go on. So I have places to sit all over my yard and by the horse.

All this exercise cant be quantified on the website I got the banner from but it does have an area that is called gardening.....

So I am gardening up at the house.... for exercise.

I may be able to break it down some if I can locate a physiology site with the info on it.

Look up Naturally Slim. I found out about it when my employer offered it to those of us that needed to lose weight. It has nothing to do with counting calories, eating this or that, etc...it is strictly on breaking bad habits and learning good habits. The idea is when and how to eat, not what to eat. I loved it!! It is a 10 week video course. I have fallen off the wagon, but knowing the good habits that I need to start doing again is much easier than watching everything little thing I eat since I am HORRIBLE at that!! Quite a few of my coworkers have done really well on it.

My problem is that I am stress eater and since taking over some new projects at work, my eating has gone crazy and I gained all 20 lbs back that I lost. However, I am not shocked...I've been eating crummy and I injured one foot and sprained the other ankle, so no exercise either.

Can you give us the principles? It's 399.00. I followed with much success years ago the weigh down diet (easily lost 35 lbs) but then two kids two years in a row I am overweight and am having a hard time committing. I am having success on the primal diet but am always looking for ideas that have worked for other people.

The basic idea is that you only eat when you are hungry. Your hunger is a scale of 1-4. 1 - not at all, 2 - snacky, but not hungry, 3 - ready for a meal, 4 - too hungry and you'll eat everything in sight. You eat when you are a 3 only...if you got to a 4, you'll have a hard time controlling what you eat. If you are out and about and at a 3, but can't eat yet, eat ~15 peanuts or 1 oz of meat (like beef jerky). This will bring you to ~2.5 and hold you over for about 1/2 hour, 45 minutes or so. When you do eat, eat SLOW...tediously slow. It takes 20 minutes for the tummy to tell the brain that you are full. Put the fork/spoon down in between bites, if needed. Eat for 10 minutes SLOW, stop for 5 minutes, then eat SLOW for another 10 minutes minimum until you are ~ 80% full or so...you don't want to feel stuffed. Little tricks like cutting your sandwich into fourths, can help with portion control if you see a whole sandwich and feel that you need to eat a whole sandwich. How and when you eat....not what you eat. Of course, eating a batch of cookies or cake slow with breaks defeats the purpose, but you get the idea. There are other little bits and pieces that are helpful, but this is the key premises and it HELPS a lot!

"Your hunger is a scale of 1-4. 1 - not at all, 2 - snacky, but not hungry, 3 - ready for a meal, 4 - too hungry and you'll eat everything in sight. You eat when you are a 3 only.."

A test I use to decide whether I'm hungry or just want to eat something is to consider what I might like to eat. If I could scarf down a plate of a food that is not a favorite I know I'm hungry. If I'm pondering what "I'm in the mood for" , I know it's more about wanting to eat.

Thank you, I guess I was already doing that remembering weigh down diet principles, that program was great for me but when I went back years later they seemed to veer off in a weird direction religiously so I have not attempted to do that again. I notice eating primal I am not craving the sweets, carbs but if I wait too long to eat I am voraciously hungry. THANKS FOR THE REMINDER! Down two more pounds this week.
