HELP!!!! ASAP!!!!!!!6/17/2014 catuion graphioc pics

Id really like to see how this comes along. It wont be for lack of trying on your part. nice job. keep m(us) posted.

so do u think its ok to keep trying to save her, I don't want her to suffer I am worried about the green I see on the skin and in the wound. I am giving her the pinG everyday today will be her 3rd shot at .05cc I was told for 4 days but was also wondering if I could do it for a few extra days or increase the last dose.

The penicillin should be 1/4 to 1/2 cc--did you mean 1/2 cc? I can't say that the wound is not infected from your pictures--I would have to see and smell it. The green is probably bruising, which I have seen before. If the wound looks goopey or smells bad, then you could irrigate it again with saline water, or the weak betadine. The betadine shouldn't be used every day unless there is infection because it can prevent healing. Just using the neosporin ointment may make it look runny, but I think your pictures look alright. Just give it a sniff (I know, it's gross) and if you see puss or nasty stuff it may be infected. Flushing it out and the antibiotics should help. I was just thinking that you could also use diluted Dakins solution on the wound as a wet to dry dressing, or to irrigate the wound once a day for a couple of days to see if it starts looking better. It is a type of weak bleach solution that has been used since the Civil War on open wounds to prevent infection. Normal saline could also be used as a wet to dry dressing instead of the dakins. This helps to remove pus and debris in the wound to clean it up. Here is some info on the dakins solution, and I would go with a half or quarter strength solution:

I'm sorry this happened, but I don't think you should give up. Animals deal with pain and illness differently than humans do. They still hurt, but they accept it better. You've been given great advice, and it sounds like you are doing a terriffic job. I had meat birds as pets before, and they are so sweet. Give her a chance and see. :)

yes I mean a half CC and no there isn't an odder its just so nasty looking, I guess I am just stressing to much over it

I am fairly new to chickens as well. We now have 12 and 2 geese in large backyard coop. The 3rd week they were with us they all came down with some kind of respiratory ailment. I was advised to give them tetracycline and I mixed it in with their water. They all pulled through after about 2 weeks of wheezing and slugging around.

I have not had a wound such as this in the chickens but last year my cat had a very similar wound. I was told by a vet she would surely die but I did not give up on her. I flushed the wound every day with surgical soap and water. I literally picked the puss out of the would with tweezers and q-tips. it was gross and at first the wound had a stink to it but I was diligent with antibiotics and cleaning twice a day. After about a month she pulled through.

With a wound like that, I would flush out the wound with soap and water like Hula said. Then pack with ointment. If it scabs over the top, pull the scab off. You want it to heal from the inside out.

The thing about deep wounds is to keep them clean, and keep the antibiotic ointment on it. They have to granulate in and heal from the inside out. This takes about a month or so. I think it looks pretty good considering. It's cute that she and the rooster missed each other, LOL.
