HELP! Baby chick scalped *graphic*...update: she didn't make it :(

This isn't dumb. I was going to suggest that you sing to the chick. I have found that chicks and poults will relax if I sing christmas carols. No that sounds dumb, but I sing very slow and softly and it really helps. I sing Christmas songs just because I know so many all the way through.

Good luck with your chick.

yeah she has a small stuffed teddy bear in there with her...and she's snuggling with my hand.

also, her right eye is barely open now...still swollen, but she can definitely see out of it. not sure yet about the left eye.

It sounds like you are doing all you can for her and it sounds like she is a fighter!! I wish you the best of luck!

No, if it was Nadia, she would of eaten her. May did this once before, but it was too late to save it.

Yeah like the time I found a bunch of bird feathers from Nadia in the house when she killed a song bird. May shouldn't be with the chicks if she does such behavior.

Thanks for the link...believe it or not, that's nothing compared to the damage that this poor chick has gone through.

Thanks again everyone...she seems okay right now; taking a nap and still hanging on.

Please keep us updated!! Hoping she recovers well, poor babe.

I hate when one of my hens does that.

One of my girls ripped a hatching chick out of the shell and was in the process of trying to take it's wing off when I found her. She had just started when I got out there, so the chick only has a small scar on it's elbow now, but it could have been a whole lot worse.

I was sooo mad at that hen for weeks afterwards and tryed to sell her several times, but I decided that it was just her nature and I would watch her from now on around nesting hens. Good luck with your little chicky and I have my fingers crossed for both of you!

she's still hanging in there, peeping and moving around like nothing happened.

There's a thick piece of skin attached to the scalp that I want to remove but I don't want to cause further damage, plus it's still attached by a lot...I would pull it back over to cover some of the wound, but the piece of skin is chewed up/folded so bad that it won't stay put. The only thing I can think to do is to leave it alone and it might eventually fall off on it's own? What else could I do?

Thanks!

The same hen that attacked this poor baby killed one that was just hatching. My parents keep telling me that I need to get rid of the hen, and I'm still mad at her, but like you said it's their nature, unfortunately. I should have been more careful to keep her away from the babies.

Thanks! And glad to hear your chick made it!
