Our bantam hen hatched 16 babies on Mother's Day, 3 days ago. Everything seemed fine until we found her pecking very aggressively at one of the chicks a few hours ago. It was a horribly bloody scene and we thought for sure he was dead - but he's not! It looks like the only injury is that ALL of the skin is gone from his back - the poor baby is a bloody mess but is still standing up (though wobbly) and peeping. Before this, he was eating and drinking fine and seemed like a healthy chick. Less than two hours ago, we checked on the chicks and he was not injured. It's been about a half hour since we found him then found this forum.

What we've done so far...

We brought him inside and put him in a safe plastic bin
We put him on a heating pad
We offered him water - he drank a little
We scrambled him an egg and offered him chick feed- he's not interested in the food

Should we clean the wound? If so, with what?
Is neosporin okay to put on his injury?
Is there anything else we can do?

Please help! Thank you

WOW! 16 chicks!!!Put peroxide on him. Call a vet that is close to you. If you don't want to call a vet, you can separate them until this chick is full or almost full grown. Just for protection so he doesn't go though to much. Hoping for the best for that little guy! He looked just like my little black Silkie when she was a chick!

Blu-Kote spray. Warmth, the vitamins and electrolites and if he shows signs of infection, start him on Duramycin-10 in his water. 1/2 tbls per gallon for 7-10 days. You've done most of it already. If he's drinking it's a good thing. He's in pain and has to adjust to that. Once he does he should start eating again and then it's just watching the wound to make sure it doesn't turn septic. You will need to keep him separated from the others until this heals up a bit, just as 12 chickenlovers3 has said.

No peroxide, wound is too raw. I agree with everything Haunted said, great advice! Another excellent product to use is Vetericyn VF wound and infection treatment.
