HELP! broody died eggs are dying

Thank you for your kind words everyone!
Of course the eggs had a little rough ending. But nevertheless, I know how to help a chick hatch if it ever comes to that again.

I do have another broody who is very successful and is a very good mother. She doesnt bite me much either so thats a plus!

Im currently treating the coop and birds individually for mites. Throwing out the boxes and straw etc..

Hopefully it will sooner eradicate the mites once and for all.

I assume the mites built up due to the adverse weather. It was so cold some days and some rain and sun.

The floor of the coop is natural grass/dirt on the outside and it got quite damp and wet/muddy.

Thats a bummer too. Anyhow I will look after my hens that i currently have and my gorgeous rooster.
Thanks again for everyones help!

Yes, rough but invaluable lessons/experiences.

Mites are usually brought in by wild birds, really has nothing to do with the weather...unless the adverse weather keeps you from treating said mites expeditiously so they proliferate. ...and broodies are prime habitat for external parasites because they dust bathe less frequently, if at all.

Hey all

Its over. I got rid of the eggs which were not viable at all. The ones that are. Did a float test. But honeslty i am unsure what to look for.

The peep that was hatching was dead.

And thats the end of it all.

:hugs

So sorry for your loss. You gave them the best chance you could. I'm glad to see that you're keeping a positive attitude, and wish you the best of luck next time around!

CHicks can be hatched with supplies u have at your home. If u don’t want to spend the money for a bator or don’t have one available. You can gather some things around the house to have the same results as if you did have a bator.

*If* you have the proper supplies, and *if* you can adjust temperature and humidity properly. You can't just throw some stuff together and hatch chicks.

Yes....and the OP's, who I don't believe had any incubator experience, situation was a bit of an emergency.

It probably drowned in coconut oil
That was totally uncalled for. The OP was doing the best they could, with what information they were given. There is no reason to be rude. The eggs didn't stand much of a chance anyway, so I doubt the coconut oil was the problem. The environment was not conducive to hatching, so it could have been anything.

A drop of coconut oil wouldn't of hurt chicks chances of hatching but covering egg in coconut oil and applying oil to peep hole every hour would definitely ruin any chance of hatching. The chick is trying to breathe thru that hole and its mouth is right behind peep hole. Can you imagine being baby chick gasping for air and getting coconut oil poured in its mouth.I won't apologize for my comment because what I said is absolutely true.I understand everyone was trying to help.It was tough situation but not all suggestions were helpful. If someone doesn't say something now. Next time similar situation occurs mistakes will be repeated.I don't think anyone wants that to happen.
