I’ve been noticing my hens have places where there feathers are just broken off and plain bald spots. One doesn’t have a tail either just the heads of feathers trying to grow. Another has a very bright red crop with no feathers and I don’t know why. I will attach pics. I can’t see any bugs crawling, and wonder if it may just be pecking, but some of my ISAs Have white spots where the outside layer of feathers are gone and just the fuzzy white ones are there. Any suggestions? What do I do?

Not an expert, but... My chickens are starting to get bald spots and broken feathers also. They are constantly preening because they're being bit by these tiny flying gnats aka buffalo gnats/biting midges/no-see-ums... So many names.. Not sure if you have them where you are,but worth a quick Google search. Just spent the past 2 hours going through threads and articles on the best way to fight them.. However, mine aren't missing any from the crop area, just back and wings..

Oh my gosh! We saw these bugs this morning and found a remedy to kill them but didn’t realize that could have something to do with it! Here is what we put in a spray bottle and sprayed in the coop-the gnats were mostly by the windows. It seemed to work well. 2 cups water, 2 cups vinegar 2 tablespoons vanilla, 40 drops of an essential oil, we used lavender.

Yes, I've tried so many things, even the permethrin spray hasn't defeated them!! I read a lot of people had success with vanilla, even if it was short term. But wouldn't you know, my child used up all the vanilla on her last cooking "experiment" so it's on my shopping list for the morning. I'm getting eaten alive as well, especially in the evening before dark. Chickens have died from these buggers and I've got a couple girls getting weak that I'm syringe feeding... Feels like an uphill battle
