One of my girls managed to get mud caked into her undercarriage while dust bathing. I've tried working it out with my fingers, but it's slow going. I really don't want bathe her; it's between 15-40F out. Of course I would bring her inside and make sure she's completely dry before putting her back out, but is there another solution? Can you "brush" a chicken? I'd let her groom it out, but I'm worried that it's making her cold 😟

Thanks for your help.

I usually just let the chickens groom the mud out. If you allow it to dry, it'll be easier to get it off her feathers.

You were right! I came back to it a couple of hours later, and it was much easier to get out with a soft bristle brush. Clean and fresh! 👍

She also REALLY liked being brushed. Got the full eye close with schmoopy mouth.
