I am a new chicken mama this spring. I have 3 easter eggers and 3 Rhode Island Reds. One of the RIR my husband and I think might be a rooster. He/she has a big dark tail but a small comb. How do I know for sure its a male or not?. We thought we heard him/her crow but not sure, as they are only 12 weeks old. Please help!, we wanted the chickens for the eggs, not really more babies!. Isnt there a claw or something on the back of the foot the males have? Thanks in advance!.

Picture please.

I think you are thinking of what is called a spur.
I believe he might be too young to have a spur right now.

Right now to me he does not look like a roo. I have a few chicken who have tails like that and his comb isn’t big enough for a roo. My roo also didn’t develop his crow till about 5 months old. Most don’t develop till 4-5 months old.

Really the only way to know for sure is by just watching. If he continues to develop and look like a roo, the its a roo. But I have a few hens that look a lot like that. I actually have one with a roo sized comb and a pretty tall tail. It turned out to be a hen thank goodness.
