Just let our two hens out to free range. One just walked to one spot and just standing still staring. We automatically know something is wrong. They are friendly but would rather not be held. I picked her up and she just stayed calm. When i put her down, i noticed liquid come out of her mouth. Her butt also looks dirty which isn’t normal for them. Did a quick read online about sour crop? An article said to hold them tilted forward and massage the crop for 15-20 seconds so we did and dark colored “spit” and dirt has come out. we have done it 3 times but article said not to do it more than 4 times?? We have her separated with just water. What can we do?! I attached photos. Her crop is definitely enlarged and squishy. The photo in the grass is before we massaged. The photos in the cardboard enclosure are after. She is just staying still and not moving fast.

Highly recommend not trying to make your chicken throw up, just in case that is something you have read suggested. Do not tilt her upside down, It is very easy for them to aspirate and die from this "treatment."

If she is still alive, smell her beak and feel her crop. If her mouth smells bad and the crop feels hard, it is likely sour crop. There are lots of threads about treating this condition if you do a search for "sour crop" in the search bar.

I agree, that "treatment" can be dangerous for your chicken.
