HELP!! Found injuryed dove by chicken run!!! UPDATE

It's a little more active, walks around a bit and drank a little water. I am not sure if it ate anything although it was sitting in the food dish when I checked on it. The wounds are oozing a little blood after I rinsed them in saline solution. I am not holding out too much hope for it, but like I said as long as it is alive I have to do all I can.

Google "The Dove Page" or ringneck doves. I would think you could use the same meds on a wild dove that you could use on ringnecks. JMO but I would keep the wounds clean and open (nothing hurts or abcesses like a cat bite) and medicate with antibiotic ointment. Let us know how it does. Good luck!!

at bites are infamous for casuing severe infection... I have read several times a vet will usually choose to give a shot of baytril and then an antibiotic such as clav potentiated amoxcillin for catebite wounds.

This morning I checked on the dove and it seems to be doing well/ It is eating drinking and pooing. The best part is that it is scared of me and try's to get away from me. yesterday it was just sitting on the bottom of the brooder. It flaps both wings and the cuts have scabbed up. I am wondering if it is best to let it go today or to wait another day to see how it does? I am just so surprised it has survived. I read that usually after a cat attack they will die within 12 hrs. due to infection. We are pushing 24 hrs. now and he seems much better.

Checked on Dove this morning and he died sometime during the night

I kinda expected it but still sad about it. Oh well I tried.

I learned a few things and so it was good in that sense and hopefully if I ever have to doctor a chicken I have a little more knowledge about what to do from this experience. First always have an antibiotic on hand and a first aide kit. Please everyone who loves there chickens prepare yourself with these things just in case. It is hard to gather stuff while you are trying to help. It is way better to be prepared and ready to help. I am stocking a med. kit now and hope to never need it but if I do I will have one at hand. I am thankful it was a dove and not one of my girls that I had to learn this lesson on.

I am sorry you lost the bird... dealing with any wild bird is difficult... there are many rehabber sites that will help you with this if you ever come across it... I have helped many wild doves and "city" pigeons and the main rule of thumb here is to keep them away from any human noise or smells... stress has physiological consequences on any bird and wild ones are particularly sensitive... what usually kills them more quickly than the original ailment is dehydration and stress.
