^I believe it is a burst air sac, if you actually wanted to know.

Silverfire, thank you for all your replies.

I'm still waiting on someone else to get home and bring a needle to pop it with.

I'm still concerned about the air in his throat though. He's shaken his head a few more times, and when he does that it really scares me. I really don't know if it's going back down his throat on it's own or not.

Its called sub-cutaneous emphysema. Its cause is air leaking either from a punctured lung or gash in the skin allowing air to collect under the skin.

Once it begins to migrate in to the skin itself touching it will produce a crackling sound.

It can be life threatening and with what's been done so far might have put him in a bad spot, that's why I said to watch him. If any distress is seen don't hesitate to poke a hole in his skin but do not go further than through the skin. The description of where is correct, the most swollen area. Air will gradually seep out.

I've seen humans with it and one horse. The horse was amazing. He had a huge gash in his chest and the act of breathing allowed air to collect under his skin. His head swelled up so big his halter had to be removed. Other than slapping some plastic wrap over the gash nothing was done to speed the air removal.

So, we think we might have pierced the skin...not really sure...His skin was seriously tough. My dad was trying really hard to pierce his skin and still be delicate. He ended up getting under it but...I don't know. I feel like it may have done something but there's still air in his head and I didn't want to risk taking the chance to attempt making a second piercing because his face was pulsating at one point from air going into it where my dad was trying to pierce it.

He went to bed happy tonight, and I guess that's all that matters. As long as he feels good, I've read the gases will disappear on their own. I feel like we may have deflated him a bit with what we did but it may be wishful thinking or just moved elsewhere.

He opens his mouth every few minutes. Is this burping or just discomfort, which I know he must have since he has air in his throat?

I will say this one more time. LEAVE HIM ALONE! Unless you see serious distress leave him be. Every time you manhandle him you are forcing air to move in to a new spot, at this point it appears to be his head and neck. That is putting pressure on his air way and esophagus.

We've left him alone since we tried to pierce the skin, he's doing much better and I don't plan on touching him anymore than I have to until he is well. :']
