Netting isn't cheap either.

Well, there is cheap netting, but it's not hawk-proof and it breaks easily under the force of weather.

What are you feeding your chickens in now? We'll offer better suggestions with more info. If you are broadcasting feed by hand across your run any bucket feeder would reduce loss. What size run if you want to try net?

I had the same problem. I used bird netting over my run. If you're on a tight budget you can also buy some cheap sheets from the thrift store and use them in the same way. Granted it will eliminate visibility from outside the pen. You can also save all your feed bags and use them in the same way. Where I live though I can get a 14ft by 14ft roll of bird netting for $10. Hope it helps.
