I like the ones that donate a currency for the people like goats/chickens....... You know stuff they can use.
alot of these charities though dont just hand it over and say - well have a nice life - they give them the education to go with it to better themselves.
they teach parents life skills that they have never learned to try to help them get out of poverty or at least get out to the point that it their standard of living goes up
a group here did a really neat thing for hockey playoffs and got everyone to buy a goat every time our team won.
they were hoping for like maybe 10 goats and ended up with over 1000
here is a link to that site they have all kinds of things you can buy

www.crwrc.org (it is a christian site)

and yes check out who your donating to is probably the most important thing

Again, education of women.

In many of these cultures, women don't have the right to say no. The better educated and economically advanced women are, the more likely they are to be in a position to say no. Also if you have the option of feeding your children, or buying birth control, most will choose to feed their children.

Also international money for family planning programs are largely tied to politics in the countries sending the aid. The US has opted out of funding many international family planning programs because of political opposition to abortion education and abortion providing.

Children also provide an economic advantage is some countries. Sometimes the only way to add farm labor is to raise your own. And in many countries, people expect their children to care for them when they are old.

The other issue is lumping the whole "Third World" together in these conversations. The needs of Sub-Saharan Africa are very different from those on the Indian sub-continent or in South America. There is everything from rural standards for families, stanch Catholocism, China's one child policy and India's preferential abortions of girl fetuses with plenty of variations in between playing into issues of family planning.

Opps, that last sentence is kinda confusing. What I meant to say is....Family planning and birth control is fighting many ingrained and entrenched ideas including: the need for children to help in farming, religious beliefs, cultural practices, family status and many other factors.

Complex problems rarely have simple solutions.

In this documentary that i saw..when the man went to talk with the people and try to educate them...he went into the town..(wherever he was in Africa) and they were all having a party and getting drunk on this type of booze thats real potent. (this is their past time in this town..) and thats when they started to talk about AIDS and condoms..and this young man said that he knew he had AIDS, but that NOONE there wears the free condoms that are given out when they hook up with each other after these parties... AND the women were willing partners..not forced or anything....it was a bunch of younger people..the younger generation there..*wish i could remember the town they were in..*
i'm serious... it really made me sick and scared at the same time..

Redhen, I'm not sure how this is different from what is happening on college campuses all over this country except this man knew his HIV status. Stupid, risky, sad and dangerous, but unfortunately all too common.

I think it's a cultural thing. Men rule EVERYTHING in those societies and women have no say in anything. Women don't understand the "no" part and can't ask the man to wear a condom. They are trying to educate women about condoms that females can wear. Also by educating women and giving them small businesses or livestock they are elevating their role in the society and giving them more say in everything.

But, yes. It's really scary. Especially some of the practices that happen, I'd explain more but it's a family friendly board and some of the stuff is just sick. In South Africa, men think they can "cure" themselves of AIDS by... well like I said family friendly board.

I know..but this was almost a whole towns mentality...
not just one kid..
The hospitals were over-full with AIDS patients there..(literally had no more beds for them!..they were dying on mats..) they said ALOT of people had it..and its just an accepted thing there to have unprotected sex KNOWING that you have AIDS.....i'm just saying that their way of thinking was so different than ours..
Thats why i say that for all the education and food we sent their way...the basic mentality will not change... its their country..not the USA...we cant expect them to think like we do here.
Our resorces would be better used here where there are needy people also...just saying...

Actually, I'm glad you said this. If they were taught about the ovulation cycle, they could naturally control births. The sad truth there is that most people in the USA don't even understand the ovulation cycle, when you can get pregnant and how long before that time you should "be careful". There's a good bit of education that could help, even with our nation.

I'm sorry..once again i have to say..you would be suprised at how much these people really DO know. I can bet tha they DO know about the ovulation cycle. Bet its been passed down from mother to daughter for centuries...they may not call it an "ovulation cycle". but i bet they know about it.
Also...as i said..we have been over there for YEARS..more years then i've been alive..and we HAVE been teaching them about birth control...
Just saying..
