Help me understand please! Third world countries...

Actually, I'm glad you said this. If they were taught about the ovulation cycle, they could naturally control births. The sad truth there is that most people in the USA don't even understand the ovulation cycle, when you can get pregnant and how long before that time you should "be careful". There's a good bit of education that could help, even with our nation.

Ah, if only it were so simple. However, many cultures consider every new child a gift from god to be celebrated. To them there is no such thing as too many children. A man considers himself not much of a man if he isn't siring a new child each year and a woman feels she is old and useless if she doesn't have more children.

We like to pretend that cultural differences really don't exist, but they most certainly do. Where is it written that we are right and they are wrong? Or that we have any right at all to suggest it?

Something to also consider is in many of these palces infant and young child mortality (children under 5) can be as high as 30-40%. When on average a village has 1/3rd of it's children die off very young "stop making babies" is a hard sell.

right! thats what i am trying to say. They have their own way of thinking/beliefs. birth control simply is not how they think. Why should we keep trying to change them? we've been doing it for a few generations now...nothing has really changed..

I read an article on msn that talked about a boy from a third world country. He went to school. Then couldnt afford it. But he knew how to read. He found a book on wind power. Then with barely any education, but enough. He found scrap parts and built his own wind mill to power his moms shack. THen the neigbors.. Some american company heard about it. Then decided to fund his schooling. Knowing that he would do good things for his community..

I sure wish I could find the link for that article..

To tie all these topics together ... the number one factor in reducing a nation's birth rate is the education of women. Period. A basic education opens the door for more education, jobs, and independence. From there a woman can decide on delayed marriage, birth control, abortion, abstinence, etc, but until she has a reason and the means to control her own fertility the cycle of poverty will continue.

Also, consider how much information is only in written form. When a child learns basic reading, they gain access to information on whatever they need, whether it is basic agriculture, rocket science, or the directions on a condom package.

Yes, the peace corps and other good people have been over in these countries teaching about birth control for YEARS AND YEARS...AND years..
nothing has changed at all...
see the problem is..we are trying to put OUR USA beliefs onto these people....they dont think like us...just like we dont think like them. We cant change anything over there..i recently saw a documentary on AIDS in Africa..thhis african man that lives here went over there to try to help and educate the people over there. Know what he found? Hospitals FULL of dying AIDS patients and when he went to educate and talk to the people.... They KNEW that they had AIDS..and they said that NOONE will use condoms over there..thats just how it is! Period... they just keep spreading it and spreading it..and they know it too..
this man left the country so heartbroken to see how they didnt care to help themselves..he got a tase of reality over there..
they want our free food but dont want to change their ways of life...period.

*and before anyone starts to bash me..one of my best friends is from Ghana...SHE , herself tells me the same.....and i dont want anyone to think that i have a problem with people from these countries....thats not it at all!!!!!!! I am just saying that i believe that our resorces would be better spent here in the USA....thats all.*

Totally agree. Look at the Appalication(sp) mountain people, some of them don't have indoor plumbing, the children look starved, BECAUSE THERE IS NO WORK THERE.Lets help the USA get education and find jobs to feed their family before we begin to try to force our opinion on other countries. just because we are America, doesn't always make us right.Other countries have their way of living, and so many times just because it doesn't fit our belief, we try to force it on them. FIX AMERICA, THEN WORRY ABOUT THE WORLD. marrie

It's www.kiva.org and I was with them for over 2 years and loaned out well over $1,000 at one point since the banks are paying pretty much zero percent here anyway. I got back every penny on time. I think it's a much better way to help people by letting them help themselves, spreads a good work ethic and allows those who really want to get ahead actually do it.

It's a good feeling to know I helped several people around the world with interest free loans who paid me back and enriched their lives and their families + community at the same time.

I'll bet those people are proud of their accomplishments too. Beats that "stimulus check" mentality in my book

I saw a few on there from the USA recently. You'll have to check their website as the loan applicants change almost daily. I think it's a great organization and you can start with as little as $25.
