Help! My duck has leg issues!

@Miss Lydia i was going to get her a stuffed animal but luckily my cousin was more than willing to help out crackers and give us one of her ducks. It’s a female Muscovy so there’s a chance her and crackers could breed which would be exciting. Either way I’m more than relieved to have found a friend for crackers because the last thing I want is him getting lonely. Hopefully goober is out finding a happy duck family to live with and maybe even come back to visit her old pal one day. We are picking the other duck up tomorrow so this will be the last night crackers will be alone. Thank you all so much for all the help everyone here really is too kind and knowledgeable I’m happy I came here first. Last thing now is to finish making crackers sling and everything will be back to normal. (For a while anyways)

I’m glad you are going to get him a friend. He will be so happy. There is a possibility of breeding in the future. But be aware a Muscovy duck and all other mallard derived ducks make mules. Meaning they are sterile. Think Liger....:gig But they can still lead healthy happy lives!!

And you’ll need to clip a wing with her too Muscovys fly really well. I can tell you from experience Muscovys are awesome ducks and with some yummy treats she’ll be eating out of your hand in no time, so happy for Crackers and you all. And if you need a diagram on wing clipping we have that too. Please keep us update on how everyone is doing!

hi everyone. We brought home the Muscovy yesterday and brought them both inside together. First 10-15 seconds they didn’t seem to notice each other but when they did they went crazy! Both started quacking loudly and cuddling right up next to each other. Absolute love birds. It made me feel so good knowing crackers is so happy. They get along amazingly and won’t go away from each other now. With goober we could take crackers out of the cage and she would just stay there but with the new one even already she doesn’t wanna leave his side. Back to the breeding thing. I would be okay with some baby ducks but honestly them being sterile might be better so I don’t have hundreds of ducks hahaha! Either way we are so happy with our new girl olive and can’t thank you guys enough for the support! Crackers still doesn’t seem in pain and has actually been moving around more but his leg is still messed up so I still plan on getting a splint on it to see if that helps. We have been giving him warm baths and he loves them. If I remember someone said you can give them something for the pain? I can’t remember but it was farther back either baby aspirin or something of the sort? Thanks!

That is a good point about breeding! Duck math can happen to the best of us. If you want to splint, try just taking some of the tape that sticks only to itself and wrap it a couple times around the leg. It will give the leg more support. Just check it everyday. I put one on a duck and it worked itself tighter after a few days and was too tight. If it were mine, I wouldn’t give them anything for the pain. Pain is a good reminder not to overdue things. If his leg doesn’t hurt he might use it too much and make the leg worse.

Who wouldn’t want home grown birth control . Their ducklings will be sterile. Agree with @CayugaJana trying vet wrap might give him enough support you’ll just have to keep an eye on it like she said so it doesn’t tighten too much. As for baby aspirin it is also an inflammatory so if he has inflammation it may help, are you also using the liquid b complex?

That’s true Miss Lydia. Maybe restrict movement so he doesn’t overdo it when you give aspirin.

@Miss Lydia id love to post some pics as soon as I can. I’ll try just the vet wrap and keep an eye on it and if I do decide to use baby aspirin to keep him up top so he can’t move too much. We haven’t gotten the liquid b complex yet but we are getting it this week
