Hey all!
The other night, the wind slammed my coop door shut (it closes at top) where my bantam chicken was sitting. thankfully I was Outside when this occurred and saved her within seconds. She immediately went into shock and I thought She was dying. I separated her, wrapped her loosely in a towel, and gave her small amounts of electrolytes via a syringe. Yesterday she became more alert! Thank god! I assessed Her- no wounds or anything but I believe Her leg is broken. It has now been almost two days. She eats and drinks on her own confined in a small dog cage. But can’t move much. Also, after she tries- she becomes very lethargic and sleeps a lot.
Is this normal? How much time do I give Her? I love Her so much I want her to fully recover!

This is her :(

So if her leg is broken or even injured badly than it could be awhile before she is fully healed. I remember when i had a chick break its leg it was a month or two of constant care but it may be easier with a hen. Did you happen to see what part of her was slammed in the coop door? Could you get some photos of her leg or where ever the door hit her? She could be lethargic from being in pain especially if its after she walks around, poor girl. I'm not to familiar with giving chickens pain medicine so ill leave that for someone else to hopefully tell you about, sorry. Is there any swelling or hotness in her leg or was there ever any swelling? Is she able to walk at all or when she tries what is preventing her from walking? Can you try to help hold her weight and she if she can walk and if she does is she off balance, not using one leg or anything like that? if her leg was injured you can make this little sling for her (see photo below) to sit in but you have to be careful about bed sores and make sure she is still able to get out every day to stretch but with you holding her body weight so she wouldn't further injure her leg, i also found it helpful to adding something that was soft and supportive on the sling where they sit. depending on how the leg is injured and if its broken you may also be abale to splint it however without an x-ray or a true tell of what is wrong with her leg if thats the case then it may be better not to as if its splinted wrong it may never fully heal. I hope she feels better and that this was helpful!

It may take a few days for her to heal any internal damage you cannot see. A warm dark quiet place is best as she is stressed and a stressed bird does take longer to heal. You home, smells, noises and pets if you have them are going to stress her more. Plus the temp difference may be significant. If she is not used to being handled dont handle her. If she is used to it then handle her. Once she acclimates to your indoor temps being stressed she may puff up with feathers looking spaced apart and well poofy. If you see this she is trying to get warm and is not succeeding. At heat source may be needed. A blanket only works if they produce their own heat adequately. I use a 1ml sized syringe to give my chicks 1.5ml of water every few hours if i see they are not drinking on their own. Vitamin and Electrolite by Rooster Booster works.. Try room temp veggies and fruits or room temp whipped egg. I dont cook my eggs. Hope this helps..

Not sure how it will work and do not want to rain on your parade but your pics reminded me of how I just lost my best girl.
They are so fragile the simplest thing can go wrong in an instant. I hope she does not get startled and tangles in the sling.

A WORD OF WARNING.. CAUTION

In all my 30yrs of handling animals I never imagined or experienced what happened to me This week. I use the wire dog crates to house my chickens. My one chicken of several was recovering from an infection. She was in her cage everything was fine. It was dark in the room, I moved to check on her she got startled flapped around tried to escape in the dark by putting her head though the cage bars. In a panic she flapped around before I could get to her. She got caught in the wire some how and before I could get to her she broke her neck on the dog cage wire. She died instantly.

I now have placed chicken wire secured tightly with zipties and placed thick black duct tape on chicken wire edges. To little to late I am afraid. Like I said, in all my years I never had an issue with chicken safety in wire dog cages. A truly duh moment. They make chicken wire for a reason. I am also going to invest in a plastic cage with no holes in bottom section of it. It never crossed my mind this could happen BUT IT DID, I LOST MY BEST GIRL!

Thank You! You see my animals are my heart. They are worth every effort and then some. They keep me happy, entertained, feeling loved and special. The affections seems to run both ways for sure..
