Help Needed - BYC Breed Pages Cleanup

Ok, one thing we need to decide on ASAP: Right now in the breeds system we have "Bantam" and "Standard"

Over the years we've received requests to change this to "Bantam" and "Large"

What say ye?

We need to make a decision in the next 3 days!!!

Standard is a term short for Standard of Perfection. Hatcheries started using it to describe large fowl. The American Poultry Association divides them into Large Fowl and Bantams. There is also Landfowl (Large Fowl and Bantams), Waterfowl (ducks and geese), Turkeys and Guineas that are recognized in the Standard. Thus they are all "Standard" poultry.

Most use the terms Large Fowl Chickens, Bantam Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Turkeys and Guineas. All are considered domesticated poultry.

To me, that would be a good idea.
I feel many would find it useful as there are differences when you have a breed with both sizes. The weight in the standard for both large fowl and bantam is the biggest obvious difference. In addition the ABA in most cases recognizes many more colors than the APA. So a listing of the color standard for each would help folks.

I get e-mails every week from folks wondering if this or that is a standard color in one of my breeds.

Personally, I'm a bantam guy, so if it were a listing only for large fowl, I wouldnt even look at it.

I would be more than happy to help with any in my specialty breeds. all bantams in D'anver, phoenix (large and bantam) , crevecoeur, houdan, ohiki, sumatra, and a few others if need be. Also have had several years of keeping d'uccles, sultans, polish, long crowers, silkies, and old english.

Maybe one Idea to keep from having so many pages would be to have 1 page per breed but, include the standard for both sizes (if applicable) Good pics of nice quality representatives of the breed in as many colors as possible, as well as a listing of the standard colors for the breed in the APA and the ABA as these almost always vary. Having someone that actually works with the breed and has done so for year I feel would help too. This way, the info is usually going to be accurate. No need in having all this is the breed info is not accurate. Refer to my original post to see what I mean. We have a great group of folks here, and many like to help out. But in this case, the info provided is in many cases swaying a new comer either to or away from a breed. For this fact alone, we need to be sure the info provided in a BYC Breeds Info Listing is as accurate as possible.

The actual Standard for a breed can not be published without written approval of the APA/ABA. However, a proper description can be posted. My thoughts is the large fowl and bantams should be divided into the official classes. The APA has the recognized varieities listed at http://www.amerpoultryassn.com/APA_Recognized_Breeds_6_2010.pdf I am sure the ABA would be happy to provide a similiar list for the Bantams.

I agree with BBB - the listings should be accurate and factual, and not filled with personal views. The intent should be to educate the reader so that they can make an informed decision that is best for their own personal situation - not to sway their opinion to our own personal favorites.

I don't think the listings should include any sections which ask for personal comments or experiences. Just the facts, ma'am!

What I envision is having the main listing be "just the facts" with the best / most "accurate" pictures, and the sub-pages (reviews) of the breeds can be from anybody with their experiences, pictures, etc. with the breed.

So the initial presentation of the breed information will be the most "accurate" based on standards. From there visitors can dive deeper and view details submitted by a variety of members which may include a diversity in information, experiences, and pictures.

Thoughts?
