Help! New baby hatching and came home to find this!

I did find the beak on the wrong end. It has a slit in the mebrane as you can see and seems to be okay. I’m keeping it oiled and it has a wet sponge on either side pretty close by. The little pieces of shell keep falling off and now the opening is pretty big. BUT it still has clear active veining so I have done nothing to assist. Breathing seems okay. Thoughts? It’s been 24 hours now.

With clear, active veining I would let it be. It never got a chance to internally pip and rest at that stage, so it could be up to 48 hours before it's ready to zip from the time it pipped.

Just came home to this... pulled all the hatched and dried chicks out. One more hatched and is pecking at this egg- I’m assuming because he’s going crazy chirping real loud. Clear active veins. Humidity in the 80s put damp sponges all around and coconut oil on all exposed membrane. I cannot- for the life of me figure out how this little one is laying in there. I assume that’s a wing to the left of his beak. And a foot under the chin. But what is below the foot with no fluff on it? And what is the best course of action? What I’m doing? Just keeping moist? While I was gone the membrane dried out yellow. I swear I didn’t get eager and pull that shell off. And no one else was home.
I should take the little “helper” out even while wet- correct? Clearly it’s been hatched for at least three or four hours but still looks damp. Getting around well. And can I place with chicks born yesterday? I already have three brooders going.

Yes, you should definitely take out the chick that's pulling pieces of shell off. I don't see any veins that look too active, a couple residual ones that might have some activity, but nothing terrible. Can you make out if it has any yolk left to go?

:pop How's the chick?
thanks for asking. The chick hatched all on its own about 11:30 last night. The leg looks a little crooked. I was hoping it will straighten out on it’s own but I’m not sure it will. It’s the same today. Kind of bull-legged and walking on side of foot. Am I dealing with splay leg? Should I be wrapping?

@Pyxis too!

Btw Pyxis thanks to your (good) influence, I have an emu in the bator. The new bator I had to buy in order to accommodate such a monstrous egg!

As far as the legs are concern, they will usually straighten out in a day....... I too, was worried when their feet all folded in thinking they had splayed legs but they eventually straightened out.

So glad to hear it hatched on its own! I figured it would it be able to, with all that shell gone :) Keep an eye on the leg and hopefully it'll straighten out on its own.

And awesome about the emu! Haha, I'm spreading the joy of emus everywhere, lol. Come join the 2019 hatch-a-long!
