the chickens were out and Speckles, my barred rock cockerel swallowed a whole, but small roma tomato. He choked on it and nearly died, but I had someone hold it and we pushed it up his throat and pulled it out. He was mostly in shock but
I'm very relieved Speckles is ok. What a learning experience. We think he stopped breathing...we just worked the tomato up through his crop and then up to his beak and pulled it out. Minutes later he was scratching around looking for grubs. But temporarily he could not breath and was foaming at the mouth, his eyes rolling to the back of his head.
Yes! We really had no idea what to do. He was gagging and jerking his head around...panting. I felt his crop and felt something that felt like the shape of a hard, roma tomato...I just knew he had a hankering for the roma tomatoes (green still, unripe). And to make a long story short, one of us pushed it back up his neck and the other grabbed and pulled it out of his mouth. He seemed stunned for a few minutes. Just walked around. And then scritch, scratch...started scratching for grubs.
My poor little Speckles. For a minute I really didn't know if we could save him. I've raised him from a 3 day old chick, and have grown really attached to him. I would be really sad if he hadn't made it. (
Yeah. It was. Since he's going to be a rooster, were going to have to find him a home when he starts crowing (It's the law). Hopefully somewhere near where we live so that I can visit him.
