I just recently acquired a rescue duck that some one dumped at oure local lake and scenic I got her she has had a limp and if she is not moving around(which is not very often) she lays down but when she walks she drags her tail feathers so I picked her up and looked at her foot and her left leg had what look to be like when a chickens legs gets mites and looks nasty but I kinda touched it and it fell off and her normal skin was showing but she is still trying not to move and I think she still has some on the pad and around the pad of her foot. so I guess my question is if it is ok to soak her foot in epsomes salt(proably spelt it wrong) if not then what can I put on her foot to make it better?. any advice would be greatly apreciated thanks. o by the way she is a Muscovy and right now I have her in my room separate from all the other ducks and geese

I just did some searching for you and it appears that ducks don't get scaly leg mites. Is it possible she scraped her leg on something before or after you got her and what came off was a scab of some sort??? If she did get an injury like that have you checked to make sure the leg is not broken too??

Could she have bumble foot 09? does her pad look like it has a blk scab in the middle and swollen around it? Soaking her foot would be fine I have soaked a many a duck and chiken foot and legs in epsom salt water[warm] just don't let her drink it it works like a laxative. Let her soak in a nice warm tub of warm water and she if it helps, also very gently feel around her lower abdoman to feel for an egg inside. Hopefully it's not an egg issue. She could have been injured when you got her and that may have been why she was dumped, Not that people have to have a reason.

I think that the reason she is dragging her tail is to help her keep her balance cause when she is sitting she looks normal and when (very rarely) she is just standing Thier her tail is normal it's just when she is walking. and now that you say that miss Lydia I looked at her foot again and her good foot looks normal but her left foot the bad one is alll scaly and it is all right around the pad of her foot ad it is kinda black but I've seen pics of bumble foot and this looks a little different will soaking it Epsom salt water help it or is Thier something elce I should get.?

thanks every one for the help it's greatly appreciated!!!

Without a picture, it is hard to diagnose, but it does not sound exactly like bumblefoot. I would be inclined to think that it might be fungal in nature. One of the fungicides used on horses or dogs might help - Tractor Suppply is a possible source. I agree with your conclusion as to why she is dragging her tail. It is very likely a 'balance' thing.

I agree does sound like she is using her tail for balance, can you post a picture 09? that would help alot with getting you the right help.
I think soaking would be a good start till you can get some pics up so we can see what your dealing with.
