First time chicken owner and worried about one of my chickens.
Sunshine (5 months old, not laying yet) has kept her left eye shut all day today, opens it very rarely, barely and only for a second. She has also been laying down for most of the day for the last couple days. I saw her pecking around this morning (with her closed eye) and I think she is still eating and drinking. The other day I saw a long line of spit come from her and she sneezes from time to time. Do you think it might be a respiratory infection? We also had a very sweet chicken who was blind in one eye, she and sunshine hung out the most, but was sadly killed by a raccoon 3 days ago. Might be stress related? Any help is appreciate! Symptoms:
Closed left eye
Laying down a lot, usually separate from others
Sneezes occasionally
Spit the other day (havent seen since)

Welcome To BYC!

Can you open the eye to see if there is any pus or debris in it? If there is flush it well with saline.

You mention she spit the other day. Check her crop first thing in the morning before she's had anything to eat/drink, it should be empty.

Report back and let us know how she's doing.

Hi! Sorry for the delay in response. She seems a lot better and totally fine now. I took her in and gave her a "spa" day which she seemed to thoroughly enjoy.
There was no puss and her comb looked much healthier the next day.
Thank you for your input!
