HELP!! Silkie Emergency!

I cured my bird of wry neck. We did also catch it by 3 days old but it took 2 weeks. We have a mixture of eggs. I also have as much vitamin e as possible we have a mix of parsley which has vitamin e molasses, a little olive oil, clove oregano, tyme, basil cayanne powder and the vitamin and probitotic save a chick packets. I made like a tea and have a syringe 3 times a day I just put the save a chick packets in water mixed some of the Olive oil ,molasses, parsley, tyme clove, oregano basil, and cayanne pepper. And also cinnamon we just have as much vitamin e as possible as possible. The chick was only tiny so couldn't really feed anything else. Just egg and this mix 3 times a day. I hope it helps. This did cure mine. Now silkies are one of the most common breed to have wry neck. If you look it up it is either and injury or vitamin deficentcy. There is a lot of food you can give older birds mine was to young for other foods just the tea but it worked great just Make the mixture strong an a lot of spices and then let it sit in container an just take it out with syringe and it works great I didn't even strain it. Here are Other sources of Vitamin E include alfalfa, dandelion, nettle, raspberry leaf and rose hips. Also, spinach, sunflower seeds, pumpkins, squash, fish, olive oil are all high in Vitamin E and would be good supplements. Here is a really good link to follow. If your giving medicated feed it could also block vitamin so make sure not to give medicated. Here's the link I really hope all goes well and this helps.

Patience M'Dear! :) She shouldn't go back with the flock until her neck stands upright on its' own and she eats and drinks like a normal chick. I'd say at least two weeks, but that depends on how quickly she recovers. If you put her back too early, the others are very likely to hurt her. Chickens are quick to eliminate a weak link. Adding another chick will keep her less stressed and likely make reintegration a lot easier. The flock tends to go easier on multiples than they do singles.

Once your little one is ready to return to the flock, having "supervised visits" first sometimes helps - but that's a ways off, yet. Right now, she needs vitamins several times a day and close attention so that you know she's eating and drinking.

Oh - and vitamins in the flock's water won't hurt a thing. If you use a general vitamin designed for poultry, she should get what she needs.

thank you! shes now 4 months. i made her food into a paste with her normal feed, oregano essential oil drops, the yolk of an egg and olive oil! i started to give her that instead of normal food tonight and she loved it!

Looks like wry-neck. If it's not an injury, then it's usually a vitamin deficiency (Selenium and Vitamin E,) often in the parent stock. Both are available pretty inexpensively over-the-counter at most local pharmacies, including WalMart. If it's a vitamin issue, then it can be a pretty easy fix, but it takes a long time! The good part is that, if the vitamin treatment is going to work, you should see a marked difference in the first 24-48 hours.

When my Herman (blue splash silkie) had wry neck as a chick, we gave him the vitamin mixture dissolved in water, using an eyedropper at first. We had to hold his head up to get it into him, but that way, we could track just how much he swallowed. You'll likely need to do the same thing, for both her meds and her food.water until she can do it all on her own.
We had to hand feed Herman for nearly four days before I trusted that he was getting enough on his own. We kept up the vitamins in his water for at least two weeks after his symptoms disappeared. He's now just over a year old and has never looked back (or upside down?) again, so there is hope!
Good Luck - and keep us posted!

Sorry we also give her water with a tiny bit of gatoraid for electrolytes!
and we both work everyday so we are only able to administer her vitamins twice a day. once at night and in the morning. idk how much to give her we have been giving her .25ml a shot so .5ml a day

Are you giving the vitamins through a dropper or how are you administering them? Letting her drink on her own if she will is best they will not aspirate water in there lungs. But also make sure you are giving grit. I mixed baby grit with the eggs and gave that instead of whole grit just give baby grit. Good luck hope everything goes well.

I put about 5 tables of vitamin E and 5 capsules of selenium in half a bottle of polyvisol, I give her a couple drops in the am and again at night.

I'm sorry she seems to be in distress.

It's possible she may have aspirated some liquid.

Oregano oil is hot, so did you give too much?
Wash she having crop problems?
I would eliminate all the oils and just make her a wet mash of her normal feed and keep her hydrated.
Birds only need a very small amount of Selenium for the uptake of Vitamin E. The selenium found in 1 egg is more than sufficient. Selenium in large doses can be toxic, so I would cut out the Selenium tablets mixed with the Polyvisol.

Generally treatment for Wry Neck is 400IU of Vitamin E daily along with 1/4tablet of human B-Complex. A treat of egg or tuna will suffice for the Selenium.

fwiw- Wry Neck is a neurological symptom of certain conditions like Vitamin E deficiency and head trauma or disease like Marek's.

Here's a good video that may help you feed her.
