Get a soft wash cloth and get it wet with warm water. Wipe away the yellow crust and any gross grey gunk with the wash cloth. Hair dry the hen so she doesn't get to cold. Wet hens who are ill, or mite ridden, can't keep them selves warm as well, and could get hypothermia if wet. I learned that the hard way. If the wiping is hurting them then jus too th best you can, and spray under the wings with Vetrycin 1-2 times daily, until it disappears. Look and make sure there are no maggots under there too. This worked for me, and I had the exact same issue as you. If you use permethrin to treat of mites, DO NOT USE DERVET PERMETHRIN! Dervet contains gasoline and is toxic to you and your chickens! I didn't realize this until after I sprayed mine down, and looked at the ingredients because of the smell. Use any other brand, NOT DERVET! Hope this helps!I have just run into this! I'm worried I can't seem to find any help on this. I've never had so much trouble with my chickens but it really is one thing after another! I noticed this hen started walking around puffed up. I thought it might be cooler weather but I checked her and under her wings and there is a horrible smell! her vent is dry. I believe there must be mites but the lighting wasn't great. I have pyrethrin powder but I'm not sure its helped much.
