I have 8 barred rocks here in Southeastern OH - same age. Mine spend all day ourside of coop. in the evening they have a choice between a 60 watt bulb and huddling. They chose to do the bundle.

Do you use a regular 60 watt bulb or a small heat lamp bulb? In a reflector or just bare?
the 60 watter is. In a reflector I'm learning that 'nature' seems to have a darn good handle on things! My function is back-up. From my observations - these chicks are smart!
Sorry I was late to respond to your question . Gotta work and my time is limited here. I saw your question and thought I'd add what I have noticed. We just had a thunderstorm roll in this evening. I'm freaking and the chicks - they are all calm, snuggling with one another and looking at me like, what's your problem, hee!

I don't consider myself by no means to be an chicken expert. I liked the pictures of your set up. The folks here are a great resource. Observe your chicks. You'll know they are happy by their cheeps. The coop my chicks are in is a 'resurrected' old coop. The roof and floor have been replaced, unoccupied for at least 15 yrs. There are 4 nesting boxes. They have an enclosed yard to explore that is covered overhead because of the rural setting, hawks are a big threat. The sidewalls are also fortified against burrowing predators. (Raccoons are nasty). My peeps were raised in a watering trough with pine shavings in a heated horse tack room that served as the brooder environment. Kind of like a TSC set-up. I could tell they were getting too warm in the posh environment. Man when I turned them loose, last week - wow what a difference, I'm sure the warmer temps have helped.
